D1 matched at a top Ivy today.
CONGRATS WOWmom and daughter!!! So she will be leaving your side of the country and heading out this way!! That will be a real change from the desert and all those wide open spaces! So lil sis will be on her own for the next 3 grueling years? Was it one of her top choices for location or program?
So happy for her…hmmmm, you will be visiting some distance now…

My nieces BF was told by one of the places he was interested in that if he chose them 1st, they’d put him 1st as well. I believe he did and they did and believe he will be with niece as soon has he graduates this spring. I expect to hear news in the near future.
Not a parent but someone very dear to me got a match today and I’m so proud and happy for her. 
HImom, a friend’s daughter also matched to UCSF, her top choice.
D’s good friend got her #2 choice, a great hospital in her home area. She is very happy! Her other friend went to med school on the Army’s dime, so I think she has to go wherever they assign her (but she’ll be cool with whatever!).
Yes, niece confirmed that BF did match to UCSF, so he will be near where she is doing her residency! They’re thrilled for them! Somehow, we think my sis may be having the last of her 3 Ds married in the near future. Her middle D will marry in the next 5 months and we think the youngest may not be far behind. 
D is one year away from Match Day. She texted that her good friend matched for Denver and her guy can transfer his job there so we are all thrilled.
D sent a neat pic of the buffet of desserts for the Match Day party at her school even though she is in clinic and could not celebrate with her year ahead friends.
I know H and I will be there next year and very hopefully be celebrating all night long with D and her classmates. Fingers crossed.
It really is a long road to have traveled for these future doctors.
Some very good friends of ours told us today that their son matched at his top choice UCSD. Congrats to them!
Eons ago no parents et al came for Match Day. Nor did we have the white coat ceremony. We all sat in an auditorium and got our results. Some hadn’t matched originally but had things worked out for them by the time we all got results. H is from India and was doing a US externship- he came to the US in late fall but went through the match to start in July with regular programs. His notice came in the mail, to his hospital address.

Congrats to all who matched. Sounds like a lot of happy results! DS just got into medical school. He’s going to be military, so I have no idea how/whether he will go through match. It’s great to hear all the good news!
I believe D’s friend in the army went through match, but she wanted OB/GYN, and she was given certain hospitals where she could apply for her residency. She got a very good local hospital (I think they may have some affiliation with our local VA).
I remember, @wis75! No family was there unless you were married. Everything’s a much bigger deal these days (at all levels of schooling). Which is not to say I begrudge anyone having festivities. But my Match Day memories are still great-- we all went to the bars downtown afterwards and got schnockered and it was glorious. 
Do most parents go for Match Day nowadays? Do most parents more likely go for such an event than the White Coat?

There seems to be more applicants than slots. What happens to US students who do not get matched in either the regular or supplemental process?
Often they find spots here and there if their adivisers are savvy. Otherwise, they take a year of research/experience and try again the next year. Some students do the research/experience on purpose to make their match more adventages. Especially in areas such as Derm.
If a student does not match within a year then the Medical School has done them a disservice by not addressing whatever the problem is for that student.
Medical schools have a mission to make their students have excellent matches–it is a grade for the school.
What a day! Our youngest got what he wanted! Really emotional day to watch all the Type A personalities who have lived their lives to control anticipations now not in control. The day was filled with many celebrations!
