<p>My work environment today is all about Match Day - the day when 4th year med students open their magic “envelope” and find out where they will spend their residency.</p>
<p>Posting this not as a med school topic but just as a congrats to any parents or family members who are experiencing excitement jitters as you wait for results! </p>
<p>Any good match day stories to share? Your own? Your child or a family members??? Then there’s the residency program side of it - we find out who we have to deal with for the next 3 or 4 years!!!</p>
<p>I just read on CC last night that there was a glitch in the computer process such that some people were able to to determine (they think) their match location last Monday. Here I have been following all sorts of online stuff about residency for months & months, DD got the match email and I stopped. Now I wonder, would it have been cool to know all week or is it better to be surprised as part of the group? I think DD probably likes it better this way, but it is funny that I have researched and advised her all through undergrad & med school & residency apps using online info, yet, just stopped when I got that call that all was as it should be. I suppose it gives me hope I am not a helicopter parent.</p>
<p>Best of luck Somemom - hope she is happy with her assignment! I think this day and the “reveal” ranks right up there with not finding out the sex of the baby until it cries its first cry!</p>
<p>Do I get to join? My future SIL is in med school in UK. Don’t know the specialty but I know he got “matched” if that’s the right word in Scotland. What happens next? It’s all new to me.</p>
<p>Here in the US 4th years found out on Monday if they matched. Today they found out WHERE they matched to. Those who didn’t have a match on Monday may have spent the week looking for random openings across the country and seeing if they could attempt hook ups at those spots. Best of luck to your SIL in the UK - not sure how it works there!</p>
<p>It will be two years before DS’s turn for this. He has decided to take a tuition-free research year between MS3 and MS4. I heard that, at his school, about 60% of a class in most years would take this kind of additional year.</p>
<p>One more year for D. Started shaking, I guess, the success for parents is NO heart attack.
Congrats to all who has put it behind them, even if it is not the #1 or #2 or #3 choice, even if it is #10 choice, it is still the greatest achievement that any medical student can dream about, I will not care much, I would be happy with the top choices, but the ultimate goal is to match, it is secondary where.</p>
<p>We have been through TWO match days in a row.</p>
<p>Last year our then-future son in law matched for surgery to his #2 spot. He and our daughter were devastated because it meant he had to move away and she is currently working on her PhD and cannot move. They were determined to plow through it, though, and she has spent a LOT of time on the road in the months since….</p>
<p>Well, not long at all into his intern year, our then-future son in law decided that surgery was not at all conducive to the kind of family life he wanted and he did not want to be a surgeon. He decided last fall to go through Match again this year for Anesthesia. AND decided that, no matter what, he wanted to move back to be with our daughter. So he only applied to one program….back here, where he actually attended med school. What they lovingly call a “suicide” match. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, we were planning their wedding and THE day that worked with all those involved (lots of medical residents, of course, as members of the wedding party) was this past Saturday. We finally figured out that their wedding would fall on the week they found out (just had not thought about March 15 falling on Saturday, and what that meant…). Let me tell you, there have been many many prayers said. The good thing, I guess, is that nobody was “nervous” about the wedding itself. We ALL were nervous about that e-mail on Monday last week, though. Since he did the “suicide” match, he knew then. </p>
<p>AND HE MATCHED!!! I was at the florist’s dropping off vases when my D texted me. I cried and she might have thought me a bit nuts. </p>
<p>So now they are married and we are looking forward to his moving back here later in June. </p>
