Happy Match Day to Parents of Med Students Matching!

That’s great news! Close to home AND first choices for preliminary and specialty!

Congratulations, @MiamiDAP. Glad to hear your D got what she wanted.

Would you feel comfortable revealing what specialty she is planning?

As a matter of curiosity, how often does it happen that a resident changes specialty? I gather that sometimes they wash out, so to speak…is it hard to change, whether one is forced to, or chooses to? Is there another match process?

good for her, MiamaDAP

@consolation, sometimes residents choose to change specialties after they have begun their residency, some will do a new match the next year, others will find a place to accept them by other means. It is not for the feint of heart. If the resident washes out, is not renewed or is terminated, that is even more difficult. Read a few stories on Student Doctor Network forums, quite sad. The posters usually sound reasonable, I would love to know the other side of the story.

Thanks.

Thanks to all!

Regarding residents choosing to change specialties—I have a story to relate:

Our (now) son-in-law had always thought surgery was his thing. A few months after he met our D, he went through the Match process. They made the list of preferred places together, and his #1 was to stay locally, largely because D is at the same school working on her PhD and could not move. Well, that match day was NOT a happy time for them because he got his #2 choice which was in a city about 4 hours from D. But they made the best of it…D traveled a LOT that year (the year they were planning their wedding). SIL, however, was miserable. Not only because he missed D, but he discovered that he did not want to be a surgeon. He decided to go through Match again the very next year for Anesthesiology, and he did a “suicide” match (only applying to ONE program…back where D was). AND, to top it all off, Match Day that year was THE DAY BEFORE THEIR WEDDING!!! Thank goodness, he did match! He is very happy and this program is a much better fit for him.

So, yes it happens that people change their minds…it’s not for the faint of heart, however. So hopefully these young docs can do all they can do to be sure of their choice before they apply! I would have thought SIL had done that, though…

I have a friend from med school who was top of our class, AOA, etc etc and interested in Family Practice–not a competitive match, so she could basically write her ticket. She couples matched with her fiancee, a soso student trying for a competitive surgical residency. They matched to the middle of nowhere (bc of him). Then he broke the engagement. She ended up finishing FP in the middle of nowhere and THEN decided she was more interested in OB/gyn. So she did another residency and is double-boarded and a fabulous doctor, but only after doing a residency in a place she didn’t want in a specialty she ultimately didn’t want and shackled to a guy who brought her down. But all ended well lol.

^^^^Yikes! She must be a pretty resilient type!

Definitely!

All of them are resilient types, have to be to go thru the brutal process and the most brutal of them is a residency application, that is for sure!!

Not nearly as brutal as the residency itself- I assure you of that!

Wow J@Jaylynn. Glad that ended well for your friend.
