Backatcha, corona!!! And glad you mentioned this! TWO of my kids have to bring PIES to school tomorrow, and I nearly forgot!

~berurah

haha, thanks beruha!!! My son is making a pi shirt for tomorrow. Of course, this is right in the middle of foreign language week. He had to make a shirt for that last night.

This will be my 15th year of celebrating pi day at work. To get a piece of pie tomorrow, folks coming by will have to sing either the Pi Day song, the Pi Day fight song, or the national anthem of the United Arab Emirates. (???)

Then, at precisely 1:59 in the afternoon, we will have pizza!

The 2nd week in June is National Eat Beef Liver Week.

3/14 1:59 will fall tomorrow in the midst of my younger S’s math test. He plans to ring a bell or something to commemorate the moment. We’re going to a pie restaurant for dinner tomorrow.

(Aug. 8 was National Leave a Zucchini on Your Neighbor’s Porch Day, last time I checked.)

Pi Day 2007 is also Albert Einstein’s 128th birthday!

Thanks for the reminder of Pi Day! S2’s math teacher used to celebrate in a big way. They had a “coffee house” day, where kids could do anything related to Pi Day - bring pies, write and recite Pi poetry, etc. My S2 composed a “Trio in Pi” (using musical intervals equal to the digits of pi) that he and two classmates performed. It was a really neat day the kids looked forward to. That math teacher has since retired.

My d, in the spirit of things, began memorizing pi while in middle school (teacher had it written out on a wallpaper border around the room, so she memorized it during slow times.) She can still recite over 150 digits - she has an amazing memory.

We remembered pi day in Germany, but realized it didn’t work there - they write dates “backward” from us – March 14 is written 14.3.

Anyway, Happy Pi Day!

Ah. S will be in class while the other math nerds gorge themselves on pie.

Pi day is my 4th child’s birthday! He is having “birthday pie” tonight–a berry pie ala mode.

D presented her math teacher with a Pi pie…pie crust pi symbol on top of her mocha pecan creation! Teacher was duly impressed. Though the entire community will be celebrating during community meeting, they secreted her pie away for their math class…

mommusic~

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your sweetie! Sounds like an excellent dessert plan! :D

~berurah

All I can say is “WOW” binx!!! Over 150 digits of pi - now? What was her record? I have trouble remembering a seven digit phone number (lol).

Happy Birthday to your wee one mommusic!!! Aren’t you lucky to have a little one still at home. My “baby” is turning 15 in a few days.

It’s really neat to hear how your kids’ schools are celebrating pi day. It certainly sounds like there will be a lot of pie and pizza consumed today. Yum!!!

I had to to a Google search of bizarre holidays after reading your posts about “National Eat Beef Liver Week” and “Zucchini on Your Neighbor’s Porch Day”! When you have time to spare, do a Google search. OMG, there is a bizarre holiday every day, week, and month of the year. Very funny stuff! I especially liked “No Housework Day”. Now that will be a day I’ll be celebrating, and actually I think that should be a month-long celebration!!!

coronax–my “wee” one is also turning 15!

Looks like I need new reading glasses. I thought your little one was turning four!!! :o

Coronax - whatever D’s record was, that is still how many she knows. I think it’s 157, but I’ll have to ask. Her teacher in Germany found out (he was reading her MySpace over her shoulder one day, and saw it mentioned) and made her do it for the class. She apologized that she could only do it in English, so they let her. But the teacher printed out the digits first, so he could check her on it.

One of her previous violin teachers used to call her “The memorizing monster” - because she had pieces memorized before she was even done learning them. She doesn’t get it from me! (I actually CAN recall 7 digit phone numbers quite readily – I just can’t remember who they belong to!)

Unfortunately for me, I’m the one in our family with an absolutely terrible memory. Luckily my sons have inherited their dad’s memorization ability.

I really admire your daughter’s talent!!!

I celebrated Pi day today with my 70 6th-8th grade math students. 17 pies eaten at lunch and math class was full of hands-on activities proving that the circumference of a circle does, indeed, equal the diameter ? pi.

For those really into this, you can even calculate your “pi” birthday:

http://toys.jtey.com/pidays/

(I’m 15.2 pi years old! Won’t turn 16 until Sept. 2009! whoohoo!)

At our high school they have a pie eating contest and in “his day” my son won it! We’re having pizza pie for dinner tonight.

lmao. so the math department at my school holds an annual pi day contest, and gives prizes to the best pi-related posters, videos, songs, etc.
so every year my two friends, seniors, do a hilarious pi-day song and always win. (idk what we’ll do without them next year)
Like last year they did it to My Humps and did My Ti-83. It was pretty funny.

And what makes it funny is not only the lyrics, but the fact that one, the guy, is a complete nerd and is well-known for being one, and the girl is really smart, and also funny, well-known, and officer in a ton of clubs.

So this year they did Gavilicious, to Fergilicious. The math department chair is Dr. Gavioli, called Dr. Gav for short. It is SO funny to actually see them sing this.

Please forgive the insanely bad singing. Niether are singers, and both are probably some of the most tone-deaf people ever. (ironic because the girl is actually the daughter of the grammy-winning manager/producer of Korn). The rapping part is especially off rhythm. But the lyrics are funny and so is the idea of these kids acting gansta.
