Happy school walkout day

May the efforts of children bring peace and security to us all.

Yes.

These kids are going to bring a tsunami of change to the US during my lifetime. I for one can’t wait.

Very proud of them. Change is coming!

Columbine just walked. These kids may very well have parents who were in Columbine when that massacre happened.

Proud of my local school district for supporting these students.

Absolutely awesome!

I think most of the schools in Maine are closed today due to the snowstorm. Our local district opened late, so maybe the kids will get to walk out here.

We live in one of the bluest states in the nation. My son is a Libertarian and strongly supports individual rights for all regardless of race, color, faith or sexual orientation. He told me he was going to exercise his right to not walk out.

I’m so impressed by HS kids organizing and speaking out nationwide.

Kids are walking from school to the courthouse here. That will be longer than 17 minutes, but the school is supportive. I’m getting snapchats from DS21.

Good for him. Let’s see how he’s treated.

Our school went on lockdown for a neighbor hood “incident” instead.

So very proud of these students!

“The times they are a-changin”

Really proud of the students at both my and H’s rural Midwest high schools.

So proud of these students for organizing and taking initiative.

If they walk, but aren’t willing to put any effort into befriending and treating with respect all the troubled kids, it may be to no avail. This is the focus with my own kids (who are very good about this). I hope it won’t happen again, but just walking out of class does nothing.

We’ve always had guns widely available and in most homes prior to the last couple of decades… We have NOT always had school shootings where kids just mow other kids down. Getting to the roots of this disaffectation is imperative.

I’m glad my kids are inclusive and respectful of classmates. But I would like to think they have the option to do so because of their value system, not out of justified fear of being slaughtered by disaffected students.

Yes, our D’s group was very diverse and the interactions were richer for it. She still has a very eclectic group of friends, many of whom do nor know one another.

Inclusiveness and anti bullying are definitely important to address and prioritize.

@TranquilMind +1

Some of my local schools are counting these 17 minutes as a unexcused absence and are assigning detention to any child who participates.

Many colleges have announced that being disciplined for walking out will in no way affect admissions decisions.
