Hard or Soft Water

Does the university have hard water?

Last year I had a lot of complaints about the water being hard. I had to get special shampoo and everything because it was destroying my hair. This year I am not noticing it. I dunno what’s up with that, I live in a different dorm but I wouldn’t have thought it would make a difference.

Where did you live last year? I feel like it is messing with my face

I lived in East Quad. Hard water can do that, I think. I read that it can cause like a film of soap to stay on the skin, I seem to remember getting rashes until I started buying special soaps.

ok I might have to do that, thanks

I didn’t know water could be hard or soft.

Hard water has high mineral content.

"Most people notice problems with hard water not because of the scale formation, but because it interferes with the action of soap. Soaps and detergents lather poorly in hard water, and as a result people tend to use more, causing thick scums to form. In addition, it’s hard to get clean properly when washing with hard water, and some people feel constantly dirty when they wash with it. Hard water also leaves residue in hair which can make hair hard to manage.

[…] Detergents designed for hard water will help to get your clothes clean if you’ve noticed that things aren’t as crisp and fresh as they should be, and some cosmetics companies have also designed shower products which are meant for use in hard water. These soaps and shampoos will remove hard water buildup and soften the water you bathe with so that you can feel clean."

still not sure if it is hard though, lol

I would honestly be shocked if it wasn’t. I am looking into laundry detergents, now that you’ve brought it up I’ve noticed my clothes do seem strange.

Have you noticed your soap lathering differently? I had to switch brands for everything last year because I couldn’t get anything to lather at all, not even shaving cream.

“As in many Midwestern communities, the City of Ann Arbor has high levels of naturally occurring calcium and magnesium and is considered to be ‘hard’ to ‘very hard’ water.”
