Hard Rock Hotel under construction in New Orleans collapses

My DS#2 happens to be in New Orleans this weekend visiting friends. Am assuming they are all ok (they don’t typically go to the Quarter). But sadly, so far 2 construction workers were found dead https://www.foxbusiness.com/real-estate/death-toll-rises-new-orleans-hotel-collapse Is everyone who lives or whose kids are in NOLA ok?

DS#2 and wife are both in NOLA for the long weekend but its too early to reach out to them- doubt they are awake yet. But not sure where they are staying :frowning:

Hope you reach them soon and that they are fine!

Ugh, so sad - a structural engineer’s worst nightmare. I don’t have any data to support my claim, but I think most structural failures happen during construction. The building designer isn’t responsible for stability of the structure during construction - that’s the general contractor’s job (a lot of times a separate structural engineer will be hired to figure out shoring and stabilization requirements).

I texted my son as soon as I saw it pop up on my news feed yesterday around noon. He had some of his wife’s family in town for the baby’s birthday, and while I knew they usually wouldn’t be in the area, the in laws stay at the Marriott down the street. Turns out, they didn’t come in town as MIL wasn’t feeling well.

Thats fortuitous, @snowball. DS said he and wife are staying uptown, so are fine.
