Hard Writing question

(Using it) as a writing material in ancient Egypt, papyrus was (made from) a type (of) plant that (flourished) in the Nile Valley.
It’s no error right because the it could refer to the type of plant or papyrus, but it has to refer to the papyrus or else it would be a dangling modifier,so the it must be the papyrus, right?

Instead of “using it” which indicates to some entity actually using the papyrus, shouldnt it be “used”?

I guess, also tense matters.

(A) is a modifier error. The modifier “Using it [blah blah blah]” must be followed by a person who used it. Since the comma is followed by “papyrus,” the stuff that was used (rather than the person who used it), the modifier must apply to “papyrus.” @Yugimoto

“papyrus was” cannot relate back to “using”: it HAS to be “used” as @daman12356 pointed out.

can’t believe I missed that, got to focused on that aspect of the question

Yup. Not sure if it’s technically a dangling participle, but it’s definitely a misplaced one.

It is A :“using it”. It is a dangling modifier error. WHO is ‘Using it’. Is PAPYRUS USING IT? No! SO there’s your error. Keep asking yourself questions and you might want to try Erica Meltzer’s Grammar book…

can I ask you guys how hard or rare is it to get at least a 10+ on the essay? my friend who scored a plain 500 up from like a 400 in the writing section got a nine and a ten on his essay’s

It’s pretty easy. The essay is the easiest part of the current exam (and with the proper preparation can be the easiest part of the revised exam as well) @Yugimoto
