Hey guys! I was just wondering which school is harder to get into and why.

I would say a michigan resident would have an easier time getting into UMich than NYU, but for an out of state student it would be equally difficult. Both have similar ACT ranges (29-32/33), but I believe UMich puts more weight on GPA.

As a new yorker, I believe UMich (LSA) as an OOS college, is harder to get into. NYU (CAS) is very easy to get into. Although NYU (STERN) is not at all easy.

NYU and Michigan are hard to compare. Michigan Ross preadmit, CoE, Music and LSA are all selective in their own way. NYU Stern, CAS and Film are equally selective in their own way. I would say that Stern and Ross preadmit are equally selective. I am not sure whether LSA or CAS are comparable or not, but I would assume that they are.

I would agree that it depends on the applicant and what they want to study. For me, I was accepted to LSA and waitlisted at NYU Stern.

My brother was waitlisted at UMich and accepted into Stern. It’s always a crap shoot with college admissions

For mich resident easily michigan. For out of state, NYU arts and sciences is roughly equal maybe a little harder than mich arts and sciences. Ross and stern are about equal.

knight, Michigan does not release IS vs OOS admissions data, and neither Michigan or NYU release admissions data according to college. As such, it is not really possible to say, with any accuracy, which program is more selective.

Overall, Michigan and NYU have very similar admissions stats. Below are the 2009-2010 common data set details for both schools (NYU does not release newer data):

Average graduating HS unweighed GPA
Michigan: 3.75
NYU: 3.58

% Graduating in the top 10% of HS class:
Michigan: 92%
NYU: 64%

MID 50% SAT RANGE:
Michigan: 1230-1430 (single sitting)
NYU: 1210-1430 (super-score)

MID 50% ACT RANGE:
Michigan: 27-31
NYU: 27-31

I do not think NYU CAS is more selective than Michigan LSA, either for IS or OOS students. It is fair to assume that Ross-preadmit is as selective as Stern and Michigan LSA and NYU CAS probably also have similar admissions standards.
