What do you think?

Define “common course”

I’d probably say…

Calc I
Calc II
Calc III
Differential Equations
Chem I
Chem II
Physics I (calc I based)
Physics II (calc II based)
Physics III (calc III based)

Might be some variation school to school but I think that pretty much covers it. Not sure all schools require Chem II or even have a Physics III…

Better question, as an engineer, what was the hardest course you took that, to your knowledge, other engineers are taking as well.

Calc 1- hard the first time i took it since it was the first semester of college and i was in a big lecture hall, 2nd time had a smaller class and aced it

calc 2- took it immediately after, aced it, easy

calc 3- took it twice at my regular school and failed it (rather difficult when both teachers were foreign), took it at my CC and aced it

Diff Eq- took it at my CC and aced it, pretty easy

chem - hard simply because of it being a large lecture hall and 1st semester freshmen

p1 - medium because I had an awesome professor but no motivation to do well in it

p2 - easier than p1, took it at a CC and only didnt do well in it because my teacher was an A-Hole

p3 - havent taken yet

To me, the real hell doesnt start until you get in those Engineering Core classes where you have to do book work over and over and over for no reason and trying to actually learn the material = automatic fail

I think calc 2 is the hardest so far for me. I had a bad professor. Well I can’t blame him too much. I didn’t really study. But then again, there was too much to know (lol he gave the hardest problem ever).

Haven’t taken differential equation yet.

The most common courses among engineers are

Calculus
Differential
Linear Algebra and Vector Analysis (vector calculus)
Physics 1, 2
Chemistry I (some only required up to Chem 1)
One semester of computer science
Writing for engineers

It really depends on the person, and depends on the instructor.

If those classes are what you call hard…then engineering must be easy.I will stick to math

^
10 chars****

Probably Calc 3 or Linear Algebra.

Also, can everyone make an effort to use the word “difficult” over “hard”. We’re all college grads/students here.

…

I would think that statistical mechanics or thermodynamics would be pretty damn hard, though I guess not all engineers have to take that [I’m guessing]. Maybe programming is hard for some people, maybe math is. I wouldn’t say any of those classes are really difficult… lots of people complain about electromagnetism so that’s probably the ‘hardest’.

ugh I hate Physics II (Electromagnetic) it was annoying and i’m a ChemE major so it didn’t completely apply to me. I also hated Philosophy which was a pure writing class…

Organic chemistry is supposed to be super hard. Its the “weed out” course for pharmacy and medical students.

What does ochem have anything to do with engineering…?

ChemE, BioE, and BME students take the OChem series.

I agree with iambored10 - Electromagnetic sucked! I never did understand it.

I’m taking physics I, calc III, and linear algebra at the same time. It’s fun to see the same concepts come up in the different classes (although sometimes confusing when it’s presented in different ways).

Oh well. Yea, it’s not easy. Mutlivariable calc… geez! lol.

villager, he asked about “common courses,” meaning classes all engies take, i.e engie boot camp courses. Not major-specific courses. So thbbbbt!!!

Magneto, did you go to Columbus State CC?

@TomServo,

yes…yes i do for the time being

Me too! What teachers were you complaining about?

oh those teachers were at Case. but the physics teacher was Michael George when before he left. he was an A-hat. He made that class horrible. even though it was easy

So far, electromagnetism. Are thermo/statics/mechanics not included in this discussion?
