Hargadon, former Dean of Admission, dies at 80

“Fred Hargadon, the former Dean of Admission known for the iconic ‘YES!’ he included at the top of admitted students’ acceptance letters, died Wednesday night, the University confirmed. He was 80.” …

Dean Hargadon was a gentleman and a scholar. He personally answered even the most incidental inquiries with sincerity and wry wit.

He was a great guy who “kept things light”. He took a risk and changed my life with his “Yes” in 1976. Rest in peace Fred.

He changed my sister’s life with a Yes! in 1976, too (although not at Princeton). Then, four years later, he rejected my other sister, and when my mother wrote him a thoughtful letter about it, wrote her back two pages of intellectual response covering every issue she had raised. My mother just adored him.

He definitely had a reputation, though, for not liking students who were too smart and too focused on academics.
