And, yeah, that thread is depressing.

Hi everyone,
I’m new to the thread- from Perth in Western Australia. I applied for Harvard this year on a bit of a whim but I can see that the chances are miniscule. It seems you have to be the best in the world (or at least your country) at something as well as having ace results to get in… quite depressing really as it would be wonderful to escape from Perth for a couple of years! (I love australia so much, but I do live in the most isolated city in the world)
My results are good, I finished with 99.85 (a percentile ranking of students in the state- I was ranked number 13 out of approx 15000) and I topped the Literature exam out of all the students in Western Australia.
I found out I had to sit the ACT with three days notice and flew out to the eastern states- canberra- to sit it. I scored a 35. My SAT subjects i sat with 12 hours notice and scored 780 in chem, 660 in lit and 610 in french.
I know these aren’t the best possible standardised test scores but given the circumstances (my interviewer said she’d let them know about the situation) do you guys think they’d consider me? I mean my school results are good but it just seems that’s not enough as everyone is so brilliant!
I have decent cocurriculars- tennis, piano, singing, top ten in state for french, cross country, community service, creative writing (won a couple of comps, sent these pieces in as supplementary material) but these are at more of a local level than anything national or international… Just reading admitted students stats seems quite depressing and I feel the chances are practically zero.

Coming from the perspective of US students who know a little more about this, do you think i stand a chance at all? I know statistically i have about a 1/17 chance, but do you think i even qualify for this?

And finally, sorry for the essay…

You obviously qualify academically, but do you have something which distinguishes you from other Australian students?

Only if you have great essays/ compelling story, your chances are high otherwise it seems pretty low!

What’s this?

Auckland and Honolulu are actually more isolated than Perth, if that makes you feel any better.

haha wow.
All that means is that every year we have a state-wide french exam (not part of the core curriculum) and I placed in the top ten. The other number is my fairly average SAT score for french :S

I’m trying to get a few things published in our national newspaper at the moment, but otherwise apart from my results and my application essays (which I hope were well received) i’m not hopeful. Oh well, it’s not the end of the world if I don’t get in and it was a good experience applying!

Over here all we have to do is fill in our uni preferences and press submit!

610 French. Yikes!

is that terrible? 610 for french? i know people applying to harvard have practically perfect scores… i was surprised at how hard the french SAT was! and i’d never done negative marking, it sucks!

I am driving myself insane scrolling through these “Hopefuls” pages. April 1 is four weeks away and I’m still waiting for correspondence from the UC’s. x__x Uncertainty blows.

FYI, the decisions for Ivies are on March 30 this year

^That’s an awesome notification date. I thought April 1 was cruelly ironic.

^If you’ll trouble yourself enough to look at the posts carefully, you’ll notice that they are stats for this year only. They’re early action.

ksarmand, I thought I was the only one who noticed that.

I saw last year’s posts that Harvard email decisions did not reach Hotmail users. Can anyone confirm if this is true?

Yes, it is. They got their emails the next day, I believe.

Problem.

In my Applicant Status page they are showing my October Act test twice, where one is un-official and other is official. i have sent my Oct.Act results. so what now? should i send them again…complication… HELP!!!

If it is showing official, then sit back and relax.

But…but…but… one of the same one says unofficial… :S

it looks like this:

ACT October 2010 - un-official
October 2010 - official

Were there any problems for gmail users? I have a gmail account that I barely use, but I’m thinking about changing my hotmail email over to the gmail one just for Harvard decisions

ACT October 2010 - un-official
October 2010 - official

OMG YES I sent them with the same batch as many other schools. The other schools got them but I see this on my H status.

^ my brother sees that as well. I don’t think it’s any problem.
