I was given detention my freshman year because my phone went off in class, and on my discipline record it says “student did not follow exam procedures”… im scared this will count as academic dishonesty / ethics code? and DO I HAVE TO CHECK THAT BOX IN THE COMMON APP REGARDING DISCIPLINARY STUFF? That’s my main concern. Thanks in advance.

bump…

I would think that the situation you described is fairly innocuous and I also don’t think detentions count as reportable unless it was for a major incident in which case I would imagine that more than detention would have been warranted.

That being said, you mentioned in an earlier post that you had “two” incidents which you describe as minor. Also, since this episode is on your disciplinary record, if it is sent to the schools, I would make sure that your guidance counselor explains the nature of the infraction(s) because “student did not follow exam procedures” can be interpreted in many different ways. You need to discuss the situation with your school/guidance counselor and decide for yourself if you need to check the box or not. Keep in mind, if you elect not to and there are two infractions that show up on your record, Harvard may not care to follow-up with the school to determine the exact nature of the offenses.
They have been on the front pages themselves over ethical violations over the past year and a half and they are taking this all very seriously.

I don’t do chances, but ITA with Falcon about the cell phone/detention/disciplinary matter.
