I am a current freshman at Myers Park High school in Charlotte, NC. I am in the IB MYP program and will do the IB Diploma Programme. I am hoping to apply SCEA to Harvard. I made 2 B’s last semester, but I have maintained all A’s throughout the rest of the 2nd semester and plan to work hard to get all A’s for the rest of high school. I am in the debate team, IB Council, HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), and am planning on doing an internship somewhere. I will most likely make the varsity golf team next year. I am doing the Google Science Fair 2011 building a magnetic generator. I am doing IB HL 1 sophomore year along with other IB classes.

Please comment with suggestions, advice, and ESPECIALLY if I stand a good chance.

Doing anything for the purposes of building a resume is bad. Don’t fall for that trap.

If you see a summer program you think would be fun and that you’re interested in (and you can afford it), go for it. If not, there’s absolutely no need for summer programs.

It’s way too early to start preparing for the SAT and ACT, too. You should wait until the end of sophomore year before you even start thinking about them.

Try out clubs, pick a sport you enjoy, stick to it. Don’t pad your resume with stuff you’re doing just for the app.

To go completely against what I just said…

If you’re at all athletic I’d recommend crew… I know a kid who got in to Yale with something like a 3.0 GPA in very few honors classes, no APs. I mean he WAS incredibly gifted at rowing but seriously, the Yale coach went out and said to him sophomore year “Maintain a B average and you’re in”.
