I have recently been contacted by a Harvard graduate in my country who told me this: “I suppose you have been notified by now that Harvard Admissions wants to offer you an interview blah blah, about how we could meet etc”

The problem is that… I haven’t been contacted directly by Harvard. Could this be temporary? Or was it a mistake that this potential interviewer contacted me? (I answered yesterday, telling him I would gladly travel to meet with him etc but he hasn’t answered yet and I am starting to freak out)

I must admit that I was extremely excited about the email because not all Romanian (yes, I’m Romanian) students who have applied to Harvard were chosen for interview and my interviewer lives in a city that is 370 miles from my city so if he was asked to interview me nonetheless, it must mean that Harvard really wants to know more about me. Am I right to be enthusiastic?

I have a very strong application (2310 SAT 1 and three 800 on SAT 2), a perfect GPA, unweighted etc but still, I never dared to dream of Harvard until now.

Harvard will not contact you. Your information has been given to a local alumnus and he has contacted you. This is how it’s done. Does Harvard really want to know more about you than the others? No. They really want to know about all of you.

It’s likely that the others just haven’t been contacted or that the person who called you is just faster than the other interviewers. Optimally, they would want to interview 100% of the applicants.

Be encouraged but don’t read into it. Good luck however.

Don’t worry, it is customary for the alumni interviewer to initiate the contact :). As for the line “I suppose you have been notified by now that Harvard Admissions wants to offer you an interview,” that is still perfectly true. Exactly as T26E4 said, Harvard admissions would like to offer every prospective applicant an interview…

Since for international applicants interviews are only able to be offered to some and not others, previous discussions on CC have speculated whether an interview offer hold some predictative power over one’s admission chances if you’re international, but there was never any definite conclusion.

Hiiiii boogaloony!!! Did you have your Harvard interview already? Or any other interviews? I am having mine next week and I am extremely nervous and I just saw your post. Where are you from? I am from Germany!!

I applyed for harvards summer school program as a high schooler and was accepted. I don’t know what to expect and I’m nervous. What two classes would you recommend for me to take that will give me a taste of what harvard is like? Also, can you explain to me in detail what to expect in harvard classes and how to be successful (B, B+, A) in them?

Dramirez24: for crying out loud, take courses that INTEREST you and stop worrying whether or not they will look good on your application! Study something for the sheer joy of learning, not because it will look useful. There is no A/C in the dorms so you will have to study in the library so you had better enjoy what you are taking. You aren’t going to Harvard College, you are attending the summer school. Try to have fun.
