Harvard Parent Thread

MSDAD

going up Friday morning - leaving Sat night

TwinMom - You’re right on target. The fact that the students are so talented is breathtaking, but seeing them so eagerly embrace one another’s cultures is profoundly moving. When my D1 and I attended the Convocation at the start of her freshman year, I was so impressed to see that only about half of the Kuumba Singers were African-American; others were white, hispanic, wearing turbans, wearing yarmulkes, etc. The Harvard breakdancing troupe is mostly Asian. My white, Southern, protestant daughter has performed in the South Asian Student Society’s Ghungroo show twice, traveled frequently with a mostly Asian group of friends, and often eats at the Hillel House. And best of all, none of the students seem to be doing this to make a point or attempt to serve as a role model - it’s just normal, everyday life in their corner of the world.

Odyssey Tigger, I’ll be there Friday - Sunday. Unfortunately, the link that I received when I registered (the one that is supposed to have the schedule) is not working.

MSMDad - Try this one:

Hat, Thank you!

Be sure to attend your student’s House Master’s reception in his or her residence and eat in the House dining hall. When we go to campus, we usually end up doing special things and attending unique events, but as a parent I have an even greater interest in developing a familiarity with my student’s daily routine.

Just want you H parents to know that my D has received some unexpectedly excellent summer job offers - looks like H is living up to its reputation. Hooray!

BTW, Have any of you received the 1098 form from Harvard? We have not received ours.

lousyanamom, not yet

Bay, congratulations! what will your dtr be doing this summer?

Is this junior parents weekend? I know my kid is performing in something tonight.

^Probably. JrPW usually falls in early March - when everything is still cold and wet.

2168: “BTW, Have any of you received the 1098 form from Harvard? We have not received ours.”

Harvard does not mail form 1098-T; you must download the form from Harvard Student Receivables:
<a href=“HarvardKey - Harvard University Authentication Service”>HarvardKey - Harvard University Authentication Service;

2009 total scholarships includes 3 semesters, if it is more than one year tuition, Harvard doesn’t send 1098-T form because it doesn’t qualify for tax deduction. That’s why we haven’t received the 1098-T form, we were told by Harvard financial aid officer.

Thanks for the info on the 1098T

gibby, Thank you so much for the info. We’ve been holding off on our taxes awaiting that form.

guitars,
D has 4 outstanding offers in the corporate sector, all with highly reputable companies: one unpaid; one at about minimum wage; and two with incomes averaging over $1K per week. If all were paying the same, her decision might have been different, but she is going to follow the money.

Bay, that’s a great situation. Congratulations to your dtr! That’s great money for a young person, and the experience is probably the best of all.

What year is your dtr? what’s her major?

GADad - Thanks for eloquently expressing what I was trying to say in your post 2162! I think that the embrace of diversity is the best part of Harvard.

Have any of you heard from your kids that the residence halls are getting really, really dirty? My boy who seems utterly blind to dirt and chaos says there are rats and scary smells in his house. Apparently no one has been through to clean their bathroom in months which really makes me shudder.

Bay, congrats to your D. We are also quite pleased with summer offers son is receiving.

I know that there have been rats, mice and roaches in or near the river houses. My daughter doesn’t look.
