Harvard Parent Thread

We received the info. today in the mail for enrolling DD in the Student Advantage Card program. It sounds like a good thing, but will a few experienced parents please offer their opinions? Thanks.

The Student Advantage card is very worthwhile if your child will be taking Amtrak. Tickets are discounted if they are purchased three or more days in advance.

any other advantages? any other thoughts?

I’m wondering the same thing, guitars101. Or D won’t be taking Amtrak.

The Student Advantage site shows all of the discounts that are available with the card:

I am thinking about not renting a car for move-in. We’ve been in Boston and we learned that having a car was not much helpful than using T-line. We are trying to make a reservation at a hotel near T-line. I advised D to not take too much stuff because she will come back for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. Do you think it is doable?

Some older student mentioned that the Student advantage card is not worthwhile.

Northwestern - It is definately doable, we moved our D in last year from Atlanta. Between the three of us we had 9 bags, including 6 suitcases by the T. It wasn’t easy especially as it was so dang hot that day but we did it without any permanent damage! I recommend the Inn-At-Harvard for a really close hotel. A little pricey but it will be a very tiring day, so a hotel that is just a few feet away from the yard is a blessing. I wish you luck and just hope it doesn’t rain

We move in with the T as well (also from Georgia, Counting). What I’d recommend doing is staying at the Harvard Club in Boston (say you’re a parent of a student; the rate is <$200 a night). The Club is three or four miles up Massachusetts Ave. from the campus, and there is a T bus stop less than 100 yards from the front door. The fare is $2 and the bus lets you out right at the gates to the Old Yard.

Student Advantage: Personally, I don’t see much of a use for it other than Amtrak.

Hope I didn’t miss this topic - my apologies if it has been discussed. Which cell phone carriers offer the best reception at Harvard? Or if it varies by area - which offer the best reception in Harvard Yard, Science Center, etc. Thanks for any advice.

reflectivemom, DD has Cingular and her phone works well everywhere on campus , including the yard (she lived in one of the dorms that was on the yard).

I haven’t had any problem with t-mobil. I know I used it in the yard and at Radcliffe Yard, not sure where else.

My daughter has used Verizon everywhere
absolutely no problems.

Does anyone have experience with Sprint?

Sprint user here. D reported no problems with Sprint service at Harvard or surrounding areas.

Does anyone know when and how the Freshmen Register is delivered?

Thank you, Counting 12001 and Gadad. Thank you for letting me know the hotel names close by from T-line. It is really helpful to know. This way I can avoid a long car line on the move-in day. Thanks again.

Anyone have any experience with the Harvard Square Hotel? It’s less expensive than the Inn at Harvard but apparently run by the same owners.

Anyone know how students are selected for the Freshmen Seminars they apply for (and/or assuming more applicants than spots for given course)?Content of application? random? student’s background? advisor’s decision? does application contain ths kind of information–or is there a student profile database for profs to look at and select students?
