[Freshmen Seminars Program](http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~seminars/apply.html)

If I am remembering correctly, the Freshman Register is mailed to the home if the parents ordered one and to the student at school if ordered by the student.

It should be noted that not every freshman is in it; some do not send in their photos and info.

It’s usually based on the strength of the freshman seminar application. Essentially, most seminars just ask a question “why are you interested” and if you make a compelling statement (ie, spend more than 5 minutes on it) you’re in.

Sprint has problems inside the buildings in the yard and in the quad. We tried external antennas in the window and it helped, but too much trouble. D is now on Verizon.

Thanks H-bomber

Thanks for all the comments on cell phones. We had heard horror stories of cell phone reception in and around Harvard. Glad to hear the good news here.

bandit_TX,
Thanks for sharing that info about Sprint. When we visited H in April, D was in Thayer where she had overnighted and we had planned on meeting by John Harvard’s statue. We tried calling her several times when we reached but she said that our call never came through. We will send her with a different plan.

Can someone comment on the use of AT&T (Cingular) as your cell phone provider?

Any thoughts on Verizon?

Thanks in advance :)

Verizon has been just fine.

Verizon is one of the only providers that works in the quad.

believer 8, As mentioned earlier in this thread, DD has AT&T (Cingular) and she has had no problems with this carrier anywhere in Cambridge. I will add that I have been in Cambridge quite a few times during the last year, including last month, and I had no problems making/receiving calls in the Harvard area with my AT&T cellular telephone.

GADAD - How does the staying at the Harvard club work, do you have to be a member, what are the rates and how is the accomodation?

Verizon is fine - see my post above.

Harvard Club?

“Anyone have any experience with the Harvard Square Hotel?”

Nothing fancy, but basic and well located.

^ Thanks, Hanna - we are booked in there for move in.

Two topics -

When my D moved from the Yard to the Quad for sophomore year, she could hardly use her Cingular coverage. To be fair, she wasn’t exactly in the Quad; she was in a satellite building across the street, but she’d have to go outside and stand in the cold to call us. She switched midyear to Verizon and it’s been fine.

Here is the ad for the Harvard Club of Boston from the Parents Association link off the Freshman Dean’s Office webpage:
http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~parents/harvard_club.pdf
Just identify yourself as the parent of a current student. When I first stayed there two years ago, the rate was $169 (and I was delayed at check-in by the simultaneous arrival of Dick Cheney). I’ve since stayed there twice and inquired a couple other times about rooms at the parents’ rate and gotten different quotes, but always <$200. I’m going up solo for move-in, and staying in one of the “transient rooms” for $105. It’s only slightly larger than most walk-in closets, you need a map of the Club to find your way there, and the shared bathroom is down the hall, but since I’m flying up alone it’s all I need. Regular rooms at the parents’ rate are older but quite nice - the photo in the ad is accurate. The Harvard Club is atmospheric in kind of a dark, paneled, slightly worn but still elegant sort of way - I think it’s fun, but then I’m an unabashed wannabe. My wife doesn’t care to stay there because the 3 or 4 mile ride up Mass Ave. takes 10-15 minutes each way, but I think saving about $100 a night is worth it.

Many thanks, gadad - I’m a wannabe, too! I think we’ll look into this.

Sorry to intrude on the parent thread, but I have T-Mobile, and I didn’t notice ever losing reception while visiting the campus. Does anyone know how T-Mobile fares in some of the dorms/other buildings? Thanks.
