The test of every carrier is whether they work in the quad. Verizon is the only carrier I’ve never heard a complaint about from quadlings, but others may be alright too. Everyone gets service in the yard, so your average tour isn’t the best indicator.

A great big thank you to GADAD I will definately check into this.

Hmm…I guess I’ll find out when I get there :)

We’re staying at the Royal Sonesta (I think this is the name) Hotel for move-in day and we are wondering if we should rent a car or take public transportation to Harvard? Mapquest says it’s only about 2 miles away. Do people usually bring students things with them on public transp. or rent a car to transport stuff?

Sorry if this is confusing, but I am confused about that day (my son is my oldest and this is our first run at this college thing )

Thanks in advance

Royal Sonesta is a fine hotel, not very far from Harvard but it’s not conveniently located for the Red Line. You would be better off hailing a taxi. It’s not that far, so the fare should not be outrageous. Subway fare is $1.75 one way per person.

EDIT: email or call to find out whether the hotel runs a shuttle to Harvard. It may well do for move-in day.

Thanks marite! good to know. Taxi sounds like a good idea.

I’ve stayed at a few hotels in the area that run shuttles right to Harvard Square. I agree with Marite that it would be prudent to call your hotel and see if this is available.

Harvard Parent Veterans - My reservations for daughter to fly home for Thanksgiving have been changed by the airline. She is now flying out at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 26 instead of in the evening. Is this potentially a big problem since there are classes that day? She could also fly out very late that night with a terrible connection through JFK.

What’s your sense of class scheduling on the day before Thanksgiving? Would it be a really big deal if she missed school that day?

Thanks, guys!

No, not a big deal at all (even though I’m not a parent). Most classes will be cancelled that day anyways, and the ones that aren’t usually make it very easy to make up any missed material (even the crazy pre-med ones).

Classes are ususally cancelled on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving? I realize that the school doesn’t close “officially” but most professors cancel their classes that day?

A great number of them, yes. They have families that they want to be with as well. That’s not a promise that every class will be cancelled though, but I always leave Tuesday.

guitars101, if you’re still thinking of taking public transportation from the Royal Sonesta, you could consider two possible routes:
- Walking across the street to the Cambridgeside Galleria shopping mall, which runs a free shuttle every 20 minutes to Kendall/MIT station on the Red Line. From Kendall/MIT it is two stops outbound on the Red Line to Harvard, about 7-10 minutes once you’re on the train.
- Walking a few blocks to Lechmere station the Green Line and taking the #69 bus, which leaves Lechmere about every 20 minutes on the weekends, to Harvard. This would be about a 15 minute trip once you’re actually on the bus, and bus fare is $1.25 per person.

Wow, my daughter has never had one class canceled on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Haha, so far I’ve only had a couple that weren’t (and not exactly a light courseload either, including CS50, Chem 17-27, MCB 52,54,176, Physics 15, and large cores like Justice and Ec10). Oh well, like I said above, “that’s not a promise that every class will be cancelled.” Ask your daughter how many of her friends had classes that were cancelled, maybe she just has a weird schedule.

Maybe she isn’t telling and is just having too good a time there … and doesn’t want to come home any earlier than necessary!

Seriously, she always seems to have finals on the last day too.

Mollie,
Thank you! great info.

twinmom and h-bomber, I’ll just have to wait to see what my son’s professors do. Maybe we’ll come to Cambridge for Thanksgiving this year :)

I’m sorry if this has been asked previously, but I was wondering if my son should be receiving his roommate/suitemate list soon? Will it also say where he’ll be living or will it just have the names and then he’ll find out the location when he arrives?

If you don’t have that info by the end of August then you should call. They usually send out in the second or third week of August, and it will tell him location and roommates (but not layout, so if you have a friend in Cambridge have them go over and see if they can case it).

Hey, we just got this in the mail and it looks like a great way to avoid a lot of the headache of getting bedding and stuff into the dorm room. Has anyone taken advantage of this?

mammall, we were also wondering this. Some of the items seem a bit ridiculous. For example, the monogramed bathrobe. My son hasn’t owned a bathrobe since he was about 5.
