Harvard Parent Thread

Oh, gadad. I have always enjoyed your posts; I can imagine how hard it will be for you to say adieu. Enjoy White Tent Days!

Hard to say goodbye to H but our son, the last of 3, heads off to college in August. He has good stats but didn’t ever embrace the Ivy ambience and wanted to look into large university public honors programs at which he could pursue his passion of marching band percussion. The desire for a celebrated, big-time marching band cleared every school off the preliminary list that I had recommended to him a year or two ago. That took some getting used to for me, but he’s gotten into the program he wanted, he’s made it onto the drumline as a freshman, he’s gotten a spot in a great Honors hall that he really likes, and now I’m really looking forward to the next four years. The big state flagship U is the only kind of campus setting that I’ve never experienced, and I’m excited about getting some familiarity with it.

My son just called to tell us that a young student from Lowell house died this morning in her room. Wendy Chang, class of 2012. Such sad news right before graduation. My prayers go out to her family at this tragic time

we will be. I saw the Slow Dance installation last night-- very special. The AF booklet is packed with goodies!

Thanks for your posts revbon50 and 5amriser. My D is at Visitas now (I let her go alone based on posts on this thread and my desire to save money) but has already accepted her offer (applied SCEA). Let’s just say we would have spent a lot less money at other schools, so I love to hear the H success stories.

@guitars101–allow me to be the 1000th person to thank you for starting this thread. It is a wonderful resource.

guitars101-- that is horrific news. I grieve for her family and the Harvard community. May she rest in peace. The co-master of Lowell, Dorothy Austin, is the Chaplain to the College and I hope she will be able to help heal what will be a terrible wound.

bcisaidso, I went to a panel this morning for the Parents Leadership group (we are the ones who volunteer to pester the rest of the parent body for the College Fund) at Maxwell- Dworkin (BTW–FUN FACT-- Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer gave the money for the building and named it with the birth names of their mothers we were told).

We heard a panel of a prof and students who are taking a biomechanics class that works with doctors from MGH who present a problem they have been having, the class comes up with a solution-- they interact back and forth with the ā€œclientā€ and by the end of the semester come up with a fully operational prototype. They, along the way, interact with people from the business school and others to place the process in a real world context. It was very very exciting-- the students loved the class–were passionate about it in fact–and the prof is a ā€œPied Piperā€ type (and from Ireland so even more so…). SEAS seems to be a terrific place to learn to be an engineer.

Any idea about the cause of her death? She’s a dear friend of mine but I’ve lost contact with her, especially after she deactivated her facebook and mysteriously changed her number.

clag, any death, especially of one so young is a tragedy. But all the more senseless for those loved ones she has left behind if it has occurred by the person’s own hands.

Your information bodes ill. I hope she has found peace. And that those, like you, who knew her find comfort.

Hi all. It looks like my S’s blocking group (sophomores) is going to be in DeWolfe next year (instead of Dunster). Any experience with DeWolfe out there?

It also looks like he has found summer housing. Yay!

DeWolfe are the apartments. More convenient than Dunster and he’ll have a kitchen.

Ihenkin - how was he notified? Half of my D’s blocking group applied for Dewolfe but last I heard, she didn’t know when or how they’d find out it they get it. She’s sick today so I hate to call.

DS was in DeWolfe sophomore year. There are students from several houses there (Dunster, Leverett, Quincy?). Maybe a little lacking in character, but the nicest suite son had in his years at Harvard.

MSMDAD, our kids must know each other (though we must remain anonymous). We got to Harvard Yard at 6:30 a.m. for graduation, and had very good seats, though we didn’t realize at that hour that there would be no shade…and it was HOT! Since Kirkland House was the second lead house for commencement, my son and his blockmates (who helped lead the house) walked right by us. That was great. When we got back to Kirkland, we could have had good seats, but for various and sundry reasons, a number of the block families moved WAYYY back. Well, I found someone I knew up front, so I went up there with my camera when the students received their diplomas.

I feel bad that Visitas (I can’t get used to that name) was this weekend because the weather has been pretty abysmal. We live near the campus, so like etondad, we were the go-to family for home cooked meals, rides to the airport, and an extended Christmas stay, when my son’s blockmate’s flight to London was canceled on 12/22 because of snow, and he was re-booked for 12/26. My daughter and I scrambled to make a stocking and get gifts!

OK, enough nostalgia. You all can PM me with questions about the greater Cambridge area if you have any.

HI getalifemom! I can’t really help you. Not sure how he was notified. I looked back at his email which just says they choose to live in DeWolfe. I’ll ask him though…

You need to be prepared for sun at graduation, but you need to be prepared for rain too. In my daughter’s year it rained steadily during the Class Day stuff and dripped rain off and on the next morning for Commencement. It only finally dried up during the afternoon diploma ceremonies at the Houses.

My year was the worst. Forget about rain or sun. It was the year of the swine flu, N1H1 panic, and having some 1600 kids packed like sardines inside Mem Church was a disaster. I think every other person was either stiffly or cough-y. Granted, the late Rev. Gomes did give a wonderful and unforgettable address.

lhenkin - My daughter was in DeWolfe as a sophomore last year. She and her blockmates enjoyed it. In addition to having a kitchen in the apartments, the other benefits are that they are air conditioned and have cable tv (but I can’t tell you about the tv service as my D’s group did not have a tv or the want of one). DeWolfe kids still get their meals at their house and have all the privileges of their house.

@5amriser I went to the prefrosh palooza and I had such a great time. Even though I committed to Harvard before Visitas, it made me fall even more in love with the school. It is a just a great place to be!

@Quilla glad you had a great time. According to my D’s twitter, the prefrosh audience was amazing (the tweet was #goodjobharvard re: the prefrosh) and she posted a picture of the prefrosh waving their hands together at the performance). They seemed to have a great experience at the performance, both the performers and the audience.
