Harvard Parent Thread

WindCloudUltra - you guessed right, my former-Pfoho son is slated to go to the B school under the 2+2 program.
The fall of 2011 was the first B school class with 2+2’ers in it (I think) so if my son sticks to his current plan he’ll start in 2013 which will be the third class with 2+2’ers. He may defer a year as he really likes his current job and he applied to HBS 2+2 on sort of a lark, so going to HBS is a sort of “I might as well go since I got in” situation.
As his father, I say “You’d be crazy not to go!! It’s only 2 years and the average starting salary when you graduate is $140k+!”.
Regarding Pfoho, to me from the outside looking in, it was certainly a pretty house (although a little shop worn in places) and had a nice culture. The whole Harvard “house system” can’t be beat. All the houses provide an experience that is unmatched by other colleges. I have a younger daughter who goes to a “normal” college and she sees the difference - “Gee, where’s my house master, resident dean, floor tutors and house elves?”

hmmmm, an ex-girlfriend is in Mather. ;)

^getalifemom, your son’s ex is in Mather-- well having ex-es in the same house can be a bit awkward at first, but such us the growing up part- perhaps you should have written the typo “fiends” not me! Good luck to them both–I hope they can make it work; that they are able to turn from estrangment to a a semblance of friendship to true friends…Then again they can have a Phoenix like relationship in which both parties can;t either w/o each other and also w each other --they are so emotionally tiring–

I was not referring to my D. Someone on here has a S in Dunster with an ex-girlfriend in Mather. I was being intentionally and playfully vague.

Congratulations to Guitars101’s son and Guitars101! Quite an accomplishment!

Thanks for the update on announcements, have to come check in with the Harvard parents every once in a while to get my to do list up to date!

Dragging my feet all the way to Graduation. D has a summer internship (paid but not much) at Harvard as she was advised to take a year before applying to Grad School for her major. Its in her area of interest and experience in her field but she will have to get a job bartending or waitressing to be able to pay her rent. Currently she is looking for a sublet for the summer, lots of them out there but they are all really pricey!

Happy Easter and Passover to everyone, Enjoy the holiday weekend.

EAO, thank you! your dtr’s summer internship sounds like it’s exactly what she needs to do. Best of luck to her next year. It’s a good thing to take some time from all the studying.

happy Easter and Passover to everyone!

well, I’m getting nostalgic because my son’s graduation is just about 1 month away. where did the time go? sheesh!

Congrats and Vibes to GUITARS 101.

So my freshman (soon to be sophomore) S is planning to spend a month over the summer working for the Crimson. At first he thought that housing was provided, but now understands that it is not. Does anyone have any suggestions? He will get paid a little something, but not enough to cover housing. Any ideas are welcome!

Craigslist: [boston sublets & temporary classifieds “summer” - craigslist](<a href=“boston sublets & temporary "summer" - craigslist”>boston sublets & temporary "summer" - craigslist)

He will probably need to find an evening job as a waiter/bartender or as an unofficial Harvard Tour Guide on the weekends to make it all work.

Thanks Gibby! Craigslist is a good idea!

My S who is finishing his Freshman year is thinking of doing the Summer School (in two courses he can “get rid” (his term) of 3 Gen Eds (he hates them…)). Anyone have experience w/ the Summer School?-- he wonders how close to real Harvard courses they will be or whether he will be bored stiff.

My daughter took a summer seminar several years ago (Globalization and Global Justice – [Thomas Ponniah](http://www.thomasponniah.com)) and it was basically an entire 12-week semester compressed into 5 weeks. She had to read three books a week, with a 500 word essay due every Monday through Thursday and a 1,000 word essay due every Friday. The compressed nature of the beast makes it a lot of work – I doubt he will be bored!

Guitars and Lousyana Mom, I have not been on this thread for a while as my DD graduated last year. First of all congratulations to you and your kids on their upcoming graduation. You must be wondering, as I did last year, where the time went.

I wanted to give both of you and other parents of graduating H students two quick pieces of advice: Get to graduation very, very early, if you want to be able to see anything. Last year, we got to the graduation ceremony in the Yard about an hour before it started and had absolutely terrible seats on the side of Widener, where we could not see anything (even the big screen TV that was set up for family members who were seated in that area). On the other hand, as soon as the ceremony in the Yard was over, we very quickly went to her house (Kirkland) and were able to secure good seats for the house ceremony, where the diplomas are awarded. Also, if you are sensitive to the sun, wear sunblock or a hat - the sun was absolutely brutal during last year’s ceremony.

Again, congratulations to the parents on this thread with graduating students.

MSMDAD, Thank you so much! very good tips for graduation day. This is the reason I started this thread. I think it’s important for parents to be able to share knowledge and bounce ideas back and forth. Good luck to the poster who’s looking for his sons summer accomodations. I will ask a friend of mine who’s son was in the same situation in the DC area and they found a website that handles this sort of thing for students in the summer. I will get check with them and write back…

If there any parents of incoming freshman out there, I just want to say what a great first year my son is having. Honestly, all of his friends are are so nice and talking with some of them today (we live in the area) they were all telling me how much they love H and how wonderful their experience has been. I know that not every school is right for every person but I have met so many freshman at H this year that are smart, sincere and most importantly happy they are a H. I guess I am just feeling grateful and blessed tonight that my S had the opportunity to be a part of such a special community.

I am a parent of a “possible” incoming freshman. We are at Visitas, now! Everything seems to have gotten off to a great start.

Thank you to all of the parents of current students…I love to read and learn about all that you have to share!

Keep it coming!

Have fun at Visitas!

Want to echo the great experience freshman D has been having at Harvard. The opportunities H provides are just incredible. She is having the time of her life. Some CC comments about H doesn’t emphasize undergraduate is just not true. I can’t imagine a better college experience for her. She will be performing at Visitas Prefrosh Palooza. The kids are very excited to welcome the prefrosh.

Are there any CC parents who are going to ArtsFirst Weekend next weekend. We haven’t been for a couple years, but are looking forward to it this year. If you aren’t familiar with it you can google “ArtsFirst” and Harvard to see the program. I’m sure that some of your talented kiddos will be performing.

We’re getting ready to head up to campus for the last time next month - our 11th trip in six years - for our second graduation in the last two years. I’ll echo the great experience / great community comments above - getting to share the Harvard experience vicariously has been a thrill and a joy! If anyone needs some feedback about visiting campus or managing Commencement, I’ll be glad to share what we’ve found.
