Harvard Parent Thread

I don’t know, other than maybe the girls don’t need their help? The article makes it sound a little like they’re the same organization, but they are not.

Commencement.
Forgive me if I am asking an obvious question, or one that has already been answered, but what is the attire (for parents) for commencement week activities, specifically Class Day (Wednesday 23rd) and Commencement Exercises (Thursday 24th).

Nikiwe, Last year, my wife and I were in “business casual” attire for both class day and commencement. And I can tell you that others ranged from very casual - jeans - to very formal. As I mentioned in a previous post, the sun was brutal and I would highly recommend sunscreen and/or a hat.

Thanks MSMDAD!

Thanks from me too! Any other tips for the craziness of commencement week?

Thanks MSMDAD. I was wondering how long the Phi Beta exercises last and do they present the students with any certificates or do they just give speeches.

lousyanamom, I am going to send you a PM.

We would like to buy a bouquet in graduation day, we don’t know where to buy it around Harvard area. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

msmdad, I would also like info on the PBK exercises. Wow, I can’t believe the time has come for our son to be graduating. It has been the fastest 4 years of my life… in the blink of an eye, they’re not kidding!

Congratulations to all the graduates and their families :)

If anyone else could give out any words of wisdom for next weeks activites, please do so. it’s greatly appreciated!

With a nod toward guitars, my “words of wisdom” would be to prepare for rain! Checking the weather report for Cambridge is a bit disheartening. It shows a period of showers from Monday to Friday (but it should be nice on Saturday). Nonetheless, I am looking forward to the week and I hope to see some of you during the festivities.

Thanks Hat! I’m now packing for our flight tomorrow and will pack an umbrella ;)

oh well, I’m super excited about the weeks festivities so a little rain isn’t going to matter much

There was a lot of info on Commencement logistics from 2 years ago on the Parents Thread, pages 151-154:

Is anyone going to be going to the Grad Jam a cappella concert Tuesday night?

Re: Grad jam and a cappela concert. My son (a member of the Kroks) does not know if he is performing tonight (which is not unusual), but he does know that the Kroks are performing sometime this week. If it’s tonight, we will see you there gadad. Is your second D in an a cappela group (I thought it was your first D)? May go even if our son is not performing as we like all the a cappela groups at Harvard!

I saw a sign today in Cambridge which I do not ever recall seeing before. It said

I’m not sure if it was a warning to this year’s Senior class or simply a warning to the rest of the world about the Senior Class.

^^Were there old class reunions going on? Maybe it was a warning to drivers that there might be elderly senior citizen alumni doddering about.

Hat, our 2 Ds were both in the Lowkeys. The Kroks didn’t appear at Grad Jam - they may have had their own show with the Din & Tonics, who also didn’t sing on Tuesday.

The student Latin Oration included the neologism “Linsanitatum.” :)

gadad - We didn’t end up going to the Grad Jam because we heard that the Kroks were going to be at the afternoon session instead. I really enjoyed the latin oration. Even without following along with the translation, it was still a really well-done oration. I also liked the English oration and the references to the late Rev. Gomes. That really brought back memories.

Well the weather ended up being beautiful despite earlier forecasts for graduation. We had a nice time and it was great to see our daughter graduate but a bit sad as well. Couldn’t see a thing for the actual graduation day as we got there at 7 am and got stuck way in the back of the C section. Thank goodness for the House graduations and diploma ceremonies. Enjoyed the majority of the Class Day speeches although Andy Samberg’s (spelling) did not go over well with the Grandparents in our crowd. What did everyone else think, how was your grad experience?

^^^I’m glad that we got Amy Poehler at Class Day last year. The funny thing was that the kid who spoke before her was so hilarious (he talked about how all they got was the blonde Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler gave him the finger) that he pretty much stole her thunder. One of my son’s blockmates was holding up an enormous sign that said, “Leslie Knope for President” and Amy Poehler waved at her.

So I’d put money on it that the aforementioned kids in the Kroks and the Lowkeys know my son, who was in Glee Club for three years and then Collegium. All those singers seem to know each other.

Just so you all know, you had a GREAT day for graduation. It was beautiful here today, but we are about to have 4-5 days of heavy rain and then sporadic rain. I’m so happy that we are going to see the Sox on Tuesday :frowning: We went on our anniversary (May 1st). It was drizzling and 45 degrees…and they lost.
