Harvard Parent Thread

Just seconding the comments above about FPW. If you can GO. Especially nice to meet the roommate’s parents, our lot arranged a Sat parent & roomie dinner.

Many thanks to Lynda7, coureur and 2bornot2bivy for the prompt and detailed answers. Truly appreciate your comments.

Be prepared that the Parents’ Weekend is in the middle of mid-term time so depending upon their schedule you might find actual facetime truncated. But the real benefit is that they know you are there and that you care-- regardless of the amount of actual time spent together (also they may need a chance to “get a dose of home” when they are having their first Harvard exams…).

Point taken, etondad. Thanks.

On another note, has anyone been to Petsi’s Cafe? How good are their cupcakes and soups? My D is turning 18 and and it would be nice to have something delivered to her and her dorm mates. Is their delivery expensive? If so, maybe order something from Finale and have her and her friends pick it up.

@jbruin: Petsi’s not really known for their cupcakes. Nor is Finale, though their other desserts are great. If you want cupcakes, maybe Sweet? I’m not sure they deliver though…

Happy bday to your daughter!

Sweet Cupcakes in Harvard Square is said to be good, and they deliver. You can order by phone or on-line.

Thanks Wind and Coureur! Looks like an excellent selection. They do deliver for $15 but I’m trying to find out some prices. I think a call to them is in order. Bummed that we can’t be there for her 18th. First time we’ve missed her Bday.

Jbruin, I missed my daughter’s 18th, and I’ll miss her 21st this year, too. I’ve always managed to get something to her from one of the shops in Cambridge- Finale, Burdicks, etc.

Does anyone know if the final schedule is out yet??

I have always sent a Finale Cake but have gotten one of their friends to go and pick it up. Can you contact a roommate or friend of hers? My son’s 21st is coming up and I will again send him a Finale Cake, his friends LOVE helping him eat the cake!

I was also interested in this info CPU - thanks!

I did review the info in the link in Post 3672 for the final exams - be careful with the info as it does not seem to be accurate. The info in the paragraph does match the info in the chart below it for both Fall and Spring. Upon further review, I found that the final exam schedule is expected to be posted on Monday, Sept. 17.
Also, I reviewed the Academic Calendar for 2012-13 and there also appears to be contradictory info regarding when the students need to be out of the dorms for winter break. The Academic Calendar states Friday, Dec. 21 by 5 p.m., but the Guide to the First Year at Harvard says Sat., Dec. 22, 3 p.m.

Her amazing advisor offered to pick up the cupcakes from Sweet, saving me the delivery $ and hold them until the evening meeting. Thanks for all the great advice!

Anyone’s S or D been through the punch process? any insights pro or con?

For future celebration cake reference, one of the BEST bakeries in Cambridge is Flour. Amazing cakes. They are near MIT but will deliver to Harvard dorms. The owner JoAnne Chang is a Harvard grad, She started off baking cookies for study breaks.

For the past three years I have had Rosie’s Bakery deliver my son’s birthday cakes. He says they are delicious cakes. Rosie’s has been great even when I called the day before one time (I know sometimes I am a bad mom). Flour sounds great too, I just told my son to go check them out in person to compare. BTW Rosie’s charges $20 for weekday delivery, $23 for Saturday.

Getting excited about the upcoming visit! Any tips on activities and restaurants would be appreciated. We are flying in late, late Tuesday night but will be ready to roll on Wednesday. Our son has classes pretty much all day on Wednesday, so after eating breakfast with him that morning we will be on our own to explore. We will have our 11 year old daughter with us also. Thanks!

Also very excited about the upcoming visit, my wife has never been to the campus. Just registered. Last year’s schedule is available, but this year’s schedule is apparently still being finalized.

Skatjmam, If you have never “done” Boston, I would suggest the Duck Tour or a Freedom Trail walk, or go to the Boston Commons and walk around the Park, (read “Make way for Ducklings” first.) There is so much to do but I think getting a good overview of the city and its history is a good start and also gives your 11 Year old a good overview of US History!

Have Fun!
