Thanks - my son had mentioned a Duck Tour and because of our short amount of time there I thought it might be a good idea. Appreciate the reinforcement. We have Duck Tours in the South but I wasn’t sure how legitimate they were up there!

Note the Freshman Parent’s Weekend Schedule is now posted…

Just got back home from FPW - had a wonderful visit. I am convinced more than ever that my son made the right choice for him. He is enjoying his classes and activities and is constantly amazed at the history that constantly surrounds him. Feeling very blessed.

Is it too late to think about attending The Game which is in a couple weeks? best source of tickets?

Do any current Harvard parents have any insights about how Harvard deals with step parent income when awarding financial aid?

Ok…sophomore year is flying by- what can parents tell me about Jr Parents weekend? When is it and how far out should I start planning?

Ditto on the flying by and on the looking forward. Thanks for asking?

Personally, as a parent, I had much more fun at JPW than at FPW. The kids are settled in at their Houses and many of their real friendships have been formed. This was when we met the rest of the parents that we had not met in the previous year and a half. I believe that the late Rev. Gomes said that the spring semester Juniors are at the best time of their college lives. They have an idea of what they want to do, but are not yet in the pressure of trying to get a job (other than Junior Summer). Many who will do a thesis, have an idea about the subject, but are not under pressure to work on it. Most of them are just waiting for Spring Break to arrive.

My wife probably has a slightly different view of things because our son was involved in the Gilbert & Sullivan production at that time and it seemed to her that he was “always in rehearsals”. I actually had a lot of fun hanging out with our son’s friend’s parents (on the few occasions when he was not available.

@Hat! When was your son involved with G&S? A few years ago? Might know him…haha. I MD’ed a production when I was a junior.

Wow! All of you must be so proud of your children… Studying in Harvard! Say, what are my chances of admittance, if I am an international student n have 2210 score on SSAT n 800 800 780 in subject sats phy chem math 115 in toefl 3.9-4 GPA, 2 yr comm. service, intl sci olympiad 1st in state n 16th overall? I am also pretty much poor and wud need a gud enuff scholarship…

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question. JPW has usually been the first weekend in March of Junior year. I doubt that is much information currently available about the weekend. Here is a link to last years (2012) schedule, they say that the 2013 schedule will be posted in late January. http://osl.fas.harvard.edu/fs/docs/icb.topic1202924.files/Spring%202012%20Last%20Year’s%20JPW%20Schedule.pdf

Hotels did not seem to be much of an issue for JPW (and least not as much as FPW). There is not too much going on at Harvard that will bring a lot of non-JPW people to Cambridge. If you have a favorite hotel, I would look into reservations around Winter Break.

A lot of the activities available for parents are similar to ones available during FPW, like lectures, tours of the library/museums, tours of Harvard. The new activities are the House Master’s Reception (fabulous), the House Parent Luncheon (okay) and the information available from the Office of Career Services (impressive). The Glee Club will usually have a concert and I am sure that other groups will also. You should not be bored.

@WindCloudUltra - he was only in the Spring show of his Junior year (2011). He was the “Wanted” man, if that helps.

Ah. 2011 is slightly after my time, but if he was in a 2011 production, we undoubtedly have many mutual friends. I think I know which production you’re talking about. Funny anecdote: I was involved with some music/performing arts activities immediately out of college for work, and quite by accident, I met a former WSJ music critic now on the Juilliard faculty. He graduated from the College in the mid-60s…and he played the Grand Inquisitor in The Gondoliers. I believe this was during John Lithgow’s tenure as G&S president…

G&S is truly one of those ‘endless traditions’.

Curious how many of you have experience with Senior thesis? Is this important to do?

As a new H parent, I was wondering when VISITAS starts exactly on Saturday and ends Monday? Trying to make flight and hotel plans before it gets too expensive…

@Hat- thank you! I had a wonderful (but wet) time at fpw- it was the 375th celebration and monsoon- so many wonderful memories! I’m looking forward to jpw- since it’s spring- there won’t be a football game-sigh~but sounds like many other options. Thanks for the advice!!

@ohmmo- I didn’t go to Vistas(most of the parents I know didn’t go)…it is really geared toward the students. My D and her friends have enjoyed hosting Prefrosh during vistas- but I’m not even sure what if any events there are for parents. I would check out the website and see…but it’s a great independence exercise for your up and coming college student! Good luck!

ohmmho – Friday to Monday. Most people come Saturday to Monday.
