Inasmuch as we are talking about Boston, and JPW is typically the first weekend in March, spring may be “optional”.

^True. There was snow on the ground when we were at JPW last year. My D loves snow. My W, not so much.

@cltdad & @hat true…early march is a little soon to label “spring”…but I’ll prepare for snow…just in Case. My D is in Dunster…curious how they will handle the housemaster activities since the construction will be underway by then…will be grateful for any other “do not miss” events/advice. :)

re Junior Parent Weekend: Also looking for DO Not Miss advice. And do students attend the housemaster tea or just parents? Is Housemaster tea just a social function? Or is there some type of informational presentation?

^^Both students an parents attend the Housemaster’s Tea. It was a pleasant event but not especially informational. As I recall there was a live string quartet providing music at ours. That evening there was a dinner given and an auction/fund-raiser put on by the House officers. You could bid on goods and services put up for auction, such as having the House Master deliver a goody basket to your kid during finals. And, this being Winthrop House, the grand prize auctioned off was the right to stay during commencement in the John Kennedy suite (his old rooms during his senior year that has been turned into a memorial suite to house honored guests). As I recall that went for over $10,000 - waay above what my wallet could bear.

JPW was great. You see your kids at their college finest. They are experienced and confident in their place at Harvard now, no longer nervous and uncertain freshman. But the senior year grad school/med school/ job hunt frenzy has not yet begun.

But I do wish JPW was held a little later in the year. Early March for us was very cold and VERY rainy.

CPUScientist3000/others, just to clarify, what time did Friday events begin last year for Visitas? Trying to figure out when to send my son. A convenient flight would get him to campus (after the T ride) around 5:30 p.m.

And, this list is not only a great resource but also great entertainment! DH mentioned that it’s like the Unofficial Guide to Harvard for Parents…

I forgot about the auction at the house. My son’s house was Eliot and I think the auction started during the Parent Luncheon, not the Master’s “tea” (which I recall had beverages stronger than tea). They also auctioned a room (without the Kennedy cachet). When I left the room had slowly gotten to $2000 - don’t know the final price. It seemed very high at the time, but keep in mind that rooms in Cambridge will at least double in price over graduation week.

Early March is not a great time to be in Cambridge, but the next two weekends are Spring Break. Weatherwise, we had one good JPW and one fairly miserable one. By early April you have Visitas, so I’m not sure they could change it.

There is a visitas brochure in the EA admission package my S got last Dec., it has details on when it begins, room & board etc. anyone already registered? my S said registration will be in March.

yesterday I finished reading all pages in this thread, thanks to all parents who shared their experience, many useful details!

questions:
any suggestion on dry cleaning/dental clinic to use while studying there? I am looking at the calendar and just realized, the Sept. dental appt. for my S will have to be re-scheduled…

The way we worked it was to have son see Dentist during Winter Break and early in Summer Break. Usually no problems.

Hat: that’s a great idea, never thought of that… thanks!

Hi Class of 2013 parents - my family has an extra, pre-paid room at the Sheraton Commander for graduation this year - we had some family members cancel so now we have this extra room that we had to pay for in advance. If you are looking for a hotel near the Quad for this year’s graduation, the room rate is $580 per night and we have it May 28 through May 31, checking out June 1. PM me if you would like to take it over! thanks!

Has anyone eaten in the Faculty Club recently? Would it be a reasonable place to eat breakfast while on campus for JP Weekend?

Hi Jolene, I had a breakfast meeting at the FC in October, and the food was delicious. It’s not as cheap as Au Bon Pain :), but not too expensive either. For JP Weekend, I would make a reservation. You can do this online, and check out the menu too. Bon Appetit!

If your son needs a dentist in Cambridge, the Restorative Dental Group of Cambridge is very good (Dr. Fish, Dr. Kronstein, Dr. Exarchos). Avoid Sulikowski for regular dental work because he is the cosmetic dentist to the stars, apparently, and charges way more than anyone else there. The practice is on Concord Avenue, and it’s about a mile from the Yard. The 72 bus goes right there; it leaves from Cambridge Street, I think (where Annenberg/Sanders Theater are). Hope this helps.

Speaking of dental, my S has moved on to the technical school downriver and no longer has dental coverage. I was thinking the Harvard Dental School clinic would be a reasonable place to go for checkup. Does anyone have any experience with this?

My D just got assigned to the Cabot House in the Quad today. any thoughts?? i’m a little concerned with how far it is to campus and being isolated.

DS also was quaded - Currier. It is quite a distance, but I believe there is a shuttle to campus for which I don’t know the schedule. DS does walk quite a bit already so I don’t think that will be a problem for him. I don’t think he will be running back and forth between Currier and the campus multiple times everyday as he does now from his dorm.;P

This is probably posted every year on Housing Day–
[Hitler Gets His Housing Assignment - YouTube](Hitler Gets His Housing Assignment - YouTube)
;)

Oh my god that was hilarious @1moremom!

One of the comments: “it’s funny because hitler didn’t ACTUALLY go to harvard!”

And then, I came across this one and completely lost it: [Hitler gets Rejected from Harvard - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

(Warning: The video contains explicit language, and some rude commentary…!)

Thanks for the laugh!

@mom3mom and @student4ever - I would not worry about your kids being quadded. The vast majority of kids love their houses regardless of any advantages or disadvantages they have. FWIW, my daughter is in a river house (Quincy) and goes to the Quad every day because the dance center is there. She almost always walks and we have made the walk when we have visited. It really is no big deal.
