Harvard Parent Thread

@guitars101 After spending the past nine months reading through each and every page of this thread – sparingly, at times, just to always have a place to turn back to and dip into - a security blanket through those most exciting days of an unexpected Harvard admission and all that follows, I am about 40 pages from the end. For the first time, I cheated and clicked on the last page, just to make sure the thread was still going. I’d like to thank all the contributors over time. People like gadad and many others, although we’ve never interacted, I feel a great sense of you through your posts, and your contributions have been both helpful and completely enjoyable.

It’s been wonderful reading through the years and preparing for my son’s four. He’s due home tomorrow, half of his first year already done with, a whole host of new friends from around the world, a big increase in his interest in government, time spent rowing on the Charles, then deciding Not to spend more time rowing on the Charles. Other time spent tutoring the children of Somali immigrants at a Cambridge afterschool program and simply hanging out with the guys across the hall. It’s obvious to me how quickly the four years will fly.

For all the new EA class of 2019 admits, congratulations – we weren’t immediately on the Harvard is the be all and end all train when my son got in, but Visitas gave a hint as to what awaited and sealed the deal, and I have to admit, it’s been an incredible ride thus far. Harvard is a special place, and most of all, a place with a human face and not just, you know, “Harvard”.

rampions, I’m so happy to hear that your entire family is enjoying the experience of Harvard. Along the years, because of this thread, I’ve met some very wonderful people. At our son’s graduation I had the privilege of meeting several of the parents here. Also, I was able to purchase collector stamps for my son from another fellow CC on this thread.

My son is coming home on Friday for Christmas break and will be returning back to Cambridge to finish out his last semester at HLS… bitter sweet.

Have a fabulous vacation break with all your children and congratulations to the new incoming class. Get ready for an exciting ride.

Hello everyone, greetings ! Does anyone know how Harvard deal with food allergy ? Some people are extremely allergic to peanut even the smell of nuts. Stanford has a peanut treenut free dorm and dinning service. Has anyone work with AEO office before? Thank you very much. Happy holidays !!

Thank you very much!! So helpful!!

My d has been admitted through early action. Although we did the financial form for early action in November, my daughter did not check the financial aid box on the form because she thought it was only for families with $65,000 o less income. We called Harvard and they said we will just have to wait until April. Will this jeopardize our financial aid? Has anyone faced similar situation? Any advice? Thank you very much.

^^ Not to worry, your daughter’s financial aid is NOT in jeopardy. If your daughter had checked the box and filled out the financial aid information prior to being accepted, she would have received an ESTIMATED award in her acceptance packet. Actual awards are based upon your families completed tax returns submitted through IDOC for 2014 and accurately completed CSS Profile and FAFAS. You must now follow the deadlines for RD students and everything will work out fine: https://college.harvard.edu/sites/default/files/RA_US_15_16_0.pdf

Thank you very much!

Hello, we are planning to visit harvard and want to stay close to harvard. Any suggestion for hotel in Cambridge? Does harvard have conference center or hotel? Any tips on parents weekend ? Are the activities all days on Friday and Saturday ? Thank you. Happy new year!! Thank you.

We used the Holiday Inn Express in Cambridge for the 4 years our grandson was at Harvard. We planned ahead and used the Holiday Inn Frequent Guest program and were able to use the points accrued for free rooms for all 4 years of visits, moving in and out and including graduation week!

Thank you Bubble. Is Holiday inn express in walking distance to harvard ?

@Dr.C88888 - My daughter sometimes walked (but she is a ‘runner’) I took a short walk to bus that leaves you off right at the yard. I also used Uber.

No (it’s about 2 miles away), but it’s walking distance to Lechmere Station, a subway stop on the Green Line, and a longer, but doable, walk to Kendall Station on the Red Line. There’s also a bus, #69, that goes directly from Lechmere Station to Harvard.

Thanks molliebaatmit - You are correct - Oops! I forgot - I guess it was the #69) put it down to Sr. moment (after all I’m about to become a GREAT GRANDPARENT - my granddaughter MIT graduate !!! lol!)

Well, I’m sorry I didn’t see your response before I posted – I thought I was at the end of the thread and didn’t realize you had already answered the question.

@guitars101, I was one of the early participants in this thread and it is so good to hear about your son’s success. The assistance that this thread provided me was invaluable. DD graduated in 2011 and has spent the last three years in graduate school at Duke - has two years to go. Cheers!

Thank you Bubble and molliebatmit for your comments. Hotels in Harvard square are very pricy. What are some pros and cons of staying in harvard square area? Is the October parents weekend a full day event? How early do most parents arrive in the morning. Thank you.

Well, Harvard Square is very lovely, and it’s easily accessible and walkable and full of restaurants and tourist sites – those are the pros, and also why it’s pricey.

Another less expensive hotel I would suggest is the La Quinta Inn in Somerville. There is a new T stop on the Orange Line, Assembly Square, that’s within walking distance of the hotel, which makes the hotel considerably more convenient than it was before the T stop opened.

Thank you very much Molliebatmit.

Hi, this is a wonderful forum. Thank you all for sharing you wisdom. My daughter will be 2019 ( early action). While we are excited, I am also worried. About visitas in April , Do most parents go to harvard during visitas ? The 2015 visitas is Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Do most students arrive on Friday and leave on Monday?
