MSMDAD, how are you? I absolutely remember you and all your wisdom. It’s so wonderful to hear about your daughter’s success. My son almost attended Duke law school, but Harvard came back with a better offer. Please keep us posted on what she is doing in grad school. Future plans?
My daughter is a freshman this year and did attend Vistas last year. There are many lectures, informational meetings, tours, etc. to choose from on all three days. It is very flexible and customizable. You could choose to be there any or all three days. Some do arrive on Friday and I believe student hosts are available then. My daughter and I arrived Saturday at noon due to obligations on Friday. We wanted to be there for the Opening ceremony that started mid afternoon. We left at noon on Monday. My daughter wanted to sit in on a couple of classes which could not be accomplished on weekends. Some students came with one or both parents. Some came alone. There is no one way to attend and enjoy Visitas. It is simply a great opportunity to help both parents and students become more familiar and comfortable with the college. It is also a great opportunity to start connecting with future classmates.
Thank you AB1234, are there meetings for parents during visitas?
DrC88888, there are a few events specifically geared towards parents. I can only remember a parents reception and a Parent Q&A session. I am sure there were others but most meetings are for parent and/ or student. There are so many options it is difficult to choose. The final schedule for Visitas came out fairly close to the event last year. You don’t have to sign up in advance for the specific sessions.
So excited to find this forum! My son was accepted EA - class of 2019- so much information here! Thanks to all who post (especially parents of upperclassmen and graduates) who generously share information! Big thanks to @guitars101 for starting this!!! We are so excited for our son’s Harvard adventure to begin!
Congratulations, CrimSon2019! Enjoy your son’s time at Harvard. It’s a great place for the students to grow and learn. The faculty and staff are also wonderful. They want the students to succeed and prosper. Please feel free to post any questions on this thread. Best wishes
Thank you @guitars101 for starting this forum and thank you all for sharing your experience. My daughter was accepted EA -class 2019 too. We are extremely excited and a little anxious. We live in the Midwest and always have big gatherings for holidays. Do most kids come home for thanksgiving? Will the dorm be open during thanksgiving break? I think my husband was about to burst to tears because Harvard does not have the entire week off for thanksgiving. Thank you for your comments and advice.
@DrC88888 Did you see my post about Thanksgiving upthread? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/17803570/#Comment_17803570 DD was not thrilled about staying on campus during the break, but she wasn’t alone, and she used most of the time to write papers.
Hope you are prepared to meet a lot of kids “Who will rule the world one day” - Good Luck
I guess that obnoxious comment that I replied to was deleted! [-X
My D is graduating in May and I have started looking at airfares and prices of tickets. Anyone want to share when they got into town last year for graduation?
@TessaR - Monday afternoon! (Graduation was on Thursday!)
Thanks Bubbe! I was looking at flying in Tuesday afternoon. Can’t believe the 4 years has gone by so quickly!
@TessaR - OOPS! Just looked up my notes and we did arrive on TUESDAY afternoon! (It was rainy and FREEZING! #-o but we did make it to the Class Day Picnic!
Boo, I know the weather can be so unpredictable. I am hoping for moderate tempertures.
We went last year for Junior Parent’s Weekend and it was freezing the entire weekend. I think the high was 22 degrees:(
Tessa, did it get that warm? I thought it was colder than that! This Texas girl froze!! Why would they have Junior Parents’ Weekend in February? Other than the weather, it was a great weekend!
It was really cold! I don’t understand why Junior Parents’ Weekend is in February. The Fall would be a better time to have the weekend. We could have at least seen the leaves changing colors:)
this year my son will be graduating from HLS ((:), it went so quickly. Congratulations to all the graduates and their parents. My suggestion for those traveling would be to book your hotel NOW! It is the busiest time of the year with all the local colleges and graduations.
Dear parents, I am a little confused. The Harvard online calculator estimated higher amount of assistance than the letter we received. Is there merit based or other types of scholarship? My husband and I almost fell out of our chairs when we saw the tuition for 2015-2016. Thank you.
