Harvard Parent Thread

When do they take the cap and gown photos?

I don’t remember.

“Does anybody know what responsibilities are involved besides academics?”

They run the House as though it were a small college: they hire and fire the tutors and staff, they are responsible for the budget, and they set policies and rules for the House.

Sounds like a lot of work in combination with teaching and research.

^^Yeah, but you get great housing provided – right there on campus.

I would much appreciate it if the parents that went to the Junior Parents Weekend could let us know how it went. Also, does anyone know when Junior Parents Weekend is next year?

We went to junior parents weekend this year and thought it was great (even the weather cooperated, despite a somewhat ominous forecast). There were a lot of things to do (performances, lectures, classes, museums) and a lot of unscheduled time to see our D and meet her friends. We thought it was a very good balance of opportunities to do scheduled activities and free time to explore on our own and with our D.

JPW was great - we went to a class, toured the libraries, went to two student shows (including the Hasty Pudding Theatricals production, which was absolutely amazing), went to a reception at our D’s House Master’s home, had dinner in the House dining hall, and of course took the friends and roomies out to eat. Younger brother experienced a significant amount of snow for the first time - he was really into that. We got a great rate at the Omni Parker House near the Boston Common - about $130 / night. The dates of JPW for next spring aren’t set yet - it could be a little earlier due to the change in the academic calendar that begins next fall.

Agree that it was great. Went to the House Master’s Reception in Master’s home, ate in the dining hall, went to a class, went to two more lectures by professors which were both terrific, visited Natural History and Peabody Museums which were free for junior parents, saw the glass flowers, walked, hung out, enjoyed. Definitely recommend it.

Regarding housing for next year. My D has been told she could store most of her things in the house she has been assigned to for next year. I am wondering from any parents if you went/or will be going to campus to help with the packing and storing or shipping things home for summer? My D doesn’t think it’s necessary but I just wonder how much time she will have with finals, et all and if I do plan to go I will need to purchase my airfare fairly soon to get a decent fair. Any suggestions??

I went to the Natural History Museum while my wife and daughter walked to Boston’s north end. My wife’s knee still hasn’t recovered. The museum was much larger than I expected. The orchestra concert on Friday night was great - I never thought I’d enjoy a clarinet concerto but it was surprisingly good. We ate several meals at my daughter’s house. Saturday night’s meal was definitely not up to the standards of the previous night. Apparently they expected that most parents had left and wouldn’t notice the recycled chicken. We have eaten there several times before and hadn’t noticed this. Several of the lectures were good. A lecture on particle physics was so so. Being a field theorist, I didn’t find it particularly well presented.

I actually enjoyed the lecture on particle physics, though I think it was definitely geared to the layperson.

Well she tried to be humorous but I found it disorganized.

“Sounds like a lot of work in combination with teaching and research.”

It is, and a lot of them volunteer to work a lot harder than they have to.

Leverett House’s Masters retired after my junior year. That summer, I was working giving tours, and frequently this crazy-looking bearded guy would bike past my tour group and wave and yell out my name. Parents would ask who that guy was, and I was like, “Uh
I don’t know.”

Come September, I found out. He was the new Leverett House Master, physicist Howard Georgi. He had memorized the House facebook over the summer so that he would know all 400+ students when fall term started. So every time he saw me in the Yard with my tour group, he was saying hello.

It still makes me smile to remember that.

^^ He’s still a crazy-looking bearded guy and still Master of Leverett House. Check out Les Phys, the musical written by a Harvard senior about Physics 16, which is taught by Georgi.

A number of years ago I was very familiar with Georgi’s work in preparation for my thesis work.

“still Master of Leverett House”

Oh yes – I got a very nice invitation from him to join other alumni for brunch at Leverett before the Game. I couldn’t be there, but it was still nice to hear from him!

Hello fellow Harvard parents,

Well, my son left last night to take a red eye back to Boston. He arrived at 5:30am this morning. He’s happy to be able to visit with his friends and girlfriend to be able to share spring break stories.

My husband and I are wondering about the next step. Do the students move into their new houses prior to the end of the year or should we try to rent a storage unit for his things? if we do get a storage unit, does anyone have any suggestions? do they book early because of all the schools in the area? this newbie would love any help :)

They will not move into the houses until fall, but they will be able to store things there over the summer.

Hi Guitars101,

Your son will be able to store his things in the house that he is moving to. Last year, DD stored most of her things in the house that she was going to move to, and the remainder with one of her roomies that was from Boston. BTW, because of bad weather in the northeast today, my DD’s connecting flight to Boston is delayed by at least three hours.
