Harvard Parent Thread

D applied Thanksgiving weekend and was contacted for an alumni interview over x-mas break. They met early Jan. She was then contacted over February break to come to Harvard for a second interview w/ adcom which became a third with another adcom.

ws59 - We had much the same concerns, and ultimately relief, after Parents’ Weekend last year. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who can afford to make the trip. There is nothing to equal the feeling of seeing your child with his/her friends after having been on their own for so long. All worries evaporated and we got to meet some wonderful parents of his friends too!

Re: Interviews. S applied on the deadline (jan 1?). Had a local alum interview him and that was it. No on campus or school officials. I believe his interview was in late Jan or early Feb.
Thanks for the stories of visits and of freshman parent weekend. I am going to try to go, but hotels in the square appear to be booked or very very expensive. For move in we stayed at a hotel that was not on the redline and I was not fond of taking the buses. Any suggestions for hotels on the redline or truly within walking distance (for me less than 1/2 a mile.). Thanks.

fauveĀ—thanks for your recommendation of Mr. BartleyĀ’s Burgers. I have passed it along to S via email and am sure it will be welcomed. smoda61Ā—thanks for your detailed report on visits to your D. It is always helpful to get the observations of thoughtful parents to develop a more complete perspective. HatĀ—I thoroughly agree.

My son lost a freshman 10 instead of gaining them. He also complains of the constant chicken on the menu and has to work to keep his weight up there. We send him boxes of protein bars and he takes the subway one stop away where there are a lot of fast food options with maximum calories for the buck. Oh to be young and with an infinite metabolism again . . .

What are the advantages (other than money and resume) in becoming a peer tutor for a course as Bureau of Study Counsel is looking for many tutors in different subjects?

^ my response is unrelated to Harvard but one surefire way to thoroughly understand a subject is to have to teach or tutor it. Therefore, it ultimately benefits the student who choses to become a tutor.

Thanks all for the feedback on interviews.

curious77, I am not sure if there will be room during Parents Weekend, but we have stayed at the Homewood Suites Arlington/Cambridge and would recommend it. It is on Mass Ave. on the border of Cambridge and Arlington and close to the Alewife Station. It has free parking and the rooms are very nice. If you drive to Harvard, it should take no more than ten minutes. Although I have never taken it, I think that there is an MBTA bus that will take you to Harvard from there.

Also try Best Western Hotel Tria. It’s a short walk to the Alewife Station.

Twinmom and MSMDAD:

Thanks for the hotels name.

Try the Harvard Club on Commonwealth Ave. in Boston. They will accommodate parents of current students, usually < $200 a night. Hotel 140 at 140 Clarendon St. is next to the Back Bay station on the Orange line, three stops from the Red Line. It bills itself as a boutique hotel and occupies the 5th through 7th floors of a building with other businesses. I’ve not stayed there before, but I’m holding reservations for spring. The price is good and the facility was completely renovated in 2005 but some reviews say the rooms are small and walls are thin.

I wonder why lurking losers (post 1692) ,who apparently have nothing else to do, feel so compelled to intrude upon a parent thread of a school with which they have no direct knowlege or connection? Pathetic.

^ I agree (10 char)

Crimson envy.

Thanks for the hotel suggestions. I will look into them. Is Alewife station on the redline? I am not very familiar with all the names etc. I definitely do not want to rent a car and I am not a fan of the buses. I do like the T. And the stop at Harvard Square is close to my child’s dorm.

Yes, Alewife is on the redline.

For all the MBTA maps: [MBTA.com > Schedules and Maps for Subway, Commuter Rail, Bus Routes, and Boat](<a href=ā€œSchedules & Maps | MBTAā€>Schedules & Maps | MBTA)

curious77, I recommended the Homewood Suites earlier and noted that it was close to the Alewife station (Red Line). I wanted to clarify that by ā€œcloseā€, I mean that it is about one mile away (I love to walk - so I do not consider this to be a long distance). If you stay at this hotel and do not rent a car, the best way to reach Harvard is by taking the MBTA 77 bus - straight down Mass Ave. Perhaps one of the local parents (Marite, where are you?) can provide additional advice. Let us know how Parents Weekend turns out.
