justchecking - Did we know that your D had decided? Congratulations to both of you!

gadad…my daughter (optimistic gal) posted her decision herself on this thread Saturday which may be why you missed it. Thanks for your congratulations!

ooops…come to think of it, daughter probably posted her decision on the official waitlist thread. Anyway, she is Cambridge bound!

Good decision - the ONLY decision, we found.

Thank you all for your advices and wonderful ideas for move-in. We’re trying to bring everthing she needs from home, so hopefully we do not have to buy stuffs there. I also need to call about the health insurance waiver. On the packet, there is a web-site the students can log into with their ID to waive the fee(not mandatory portion), but D does not have a moment to look into it yet.

I called Health Services for clarification-all these forms can become overwhelming! Marite is correct. You cannot waive the student Health Fee is mandatory and you are unable to waive it, you may, however, waive the Blue Cross Blue Shield portion if you have your own insurance. I guess it works like a supplemental insurance for hospitalization etc. Waiver forms will be available online starting around June 1. Hope it helps.

The mandatory health insurance plan (the one you can waive) is a Massachusetts state law that applies to all MA universities. The Health Fee is to operate the on-campus Harvard U. Health Services.

Thanks, gadad

Does anyone know if the “The Harvard Crimson” is published during the summer months?

I believe it is based on this article dated June 29

Question posted as another thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-2012/512535-when-visit-freshman.html

Can anyone here help her out?

I’d say Family Weekend. The Convocation is a one-hour program at the end of a relatively unstructured couple days. Family Weekend is a whole weekend of events for family members, at a time when your student will have places and faces he wants you to know.

My daughter was recently admitted to Harvard. We live in South Florida and I was curious as to where you would recommend staying when visiting; what items you feel are essential for freshman year (I saw the thread about the boots ). Thanks in advance!

^^A warm winter coat is essential - and don’t buy it in south Florida. Wait and get one in MA.

There’s a small staff that hangs around through the summer and publishes on the web. No print edition though.

mwlmom- Many girls have knee-length wool dress coats as well as sporty down (North Face) jackets. The dress coats are nice to have for the formal dances, the days she wears skirts, and to dress up jeans on trips into Boston. You can shop online at GAP or Ann Taylor, and then try them on at those stores in Cambridge for sizes & purchase. Knee-high leather boots were the fashion this winter and will probably continue to next year.

What is the trend for guys? We are from California so a sweatshirt (thats what we call them here not fleece) is usually more than enough. Shoes, everyday jackets, scarves, shirts, etc… Any help is greatly appreciated :)

I don’t think my son’s sandals will do for the winter in Cambridge or his Vans tennis shoes.
