Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates arrested

If three men gather around to drink wine with no women present you probably are in San Francisco.

That’s right, barrons, only Real Men have brewskis.

Unless somebody such as Dean Shaw of Stanford would join CC and share his experience, his data, and the way he directed his committee at Yale and now at Stanford to weigh the applicants from both coasts (and anything in between,) NONE of us can do more than speculating, and visibly quite wildly to boot. Despite that some seem all too willing to pretend that much can be learned from the analysis of data made available to the broad public or to alumni interviewer, the fact remains that the only members of the admissions’ committees KNOW how decisions were made about individual files.

The last time I looked nobody who posted in this thread had the “Admission Rep” moniker (required by CC to vouch for ANYONE speaking with authority) attached to his or her name. This means that ALL of us are looking for the outside and use educated guesses about the OVERALL results of admission seasons. Simply stated, none of us knows why a particular student was rejected, let alone why admitted. And none includes the applicant itself, his or parents, the school guidance counselor, the teachers, the interviewers, and anyone else who pretends to be in the know!

All some of us might have is the benefit of anecdotes and a glance at statistics, but that does not change the fact that data has never been the plural of anecdote!

No, real men have single malts or bourbon if you are in the South.

^ even in 105 degree Seattle heat? ;)

I personally think real men don’t need to drink at all, but that’s just me.

Me, too, Pizzagirl.

Obama’s beerfest would have been much more entertaining if Ted Kennedy had crashed it.

I think real men drink whatever they blame well please, including wine, beer, or nothing at all. Same for real women

I’ll seriously answer in a bit. I just felt compelled to note how funny the pun about Ted Kennedy was - whether intentional or unintentional, it was top notch.

Barrons, you forgot that Joe Biden was there. Doesn’t he count as a woman?

I just have a hard time remembering Joe Biden at all. What does he do these days?

So the boys had a nice time with some brewskis but they were too cheap to offer a glass of wine to the poor gal who called 911 and ended up lawyering up to defend herself from all sorts of threats and allegations? Sexists!

He’s in charge of the White House Department of Embarrassing Public Statements.

That’s why his presence was deemed essential at the beer summit. Wasn’t his statement, but it was his area of expertise.

"Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. has sent flowers to the woman who unwittingly sparked a national debate on race by calling police to report what she thought might be a break-in at Gates’ home.

Lucia Whalen’s lawyer Wendy Murphy declined to say what was in the note that accompanied the flowers, but described them as “a gesture of gratitude.”

He should have sent her a black & white cookie.

Dbate says:

I think #1 is more qualified than #5, and 2400 is better than 2200.

Then you can open up your own school and admit whoever you want.

I don’t think there’s a college in the entire US that uses SAT scores as a primary determinant of admissions, nor an admissions officer that wouldn’t prefer a kid in the top 5% of their class with a 2200 over one with a 2400 in the bottom half.

Calmom, re 1954. ROTFL. You know that every one of the four has Irish blood, right? I don’t think Lucia Whalen does. Which makes her the odd woman out.

I got into Yale so I really couldn’t be angry about anything except for maybe the fact I didn’t get bragging rights to tell my progeny.

No, I wasn’t mad about being rejected from Harvard and Princeton, because I didn’t really want to go to those schools and only applied because i figured you should apply to HYP and they had equitable financial aid. Besides I checked Yale first and was so happy it didn’t matter.

I know 100% why I was rejected from Harvard and Princeton, they both required SAT subject tests, whereas Yale did not if you send in the ACT. I scored 750/710/680, and I am sure the 680 on Math 2 is what killed my app at those two.
