Harvard RD Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

Does not matter. Everyone who is actually Hispanic knows what Hispanic is. Everyone learns this in Spanish class(whoever takes the class). A person from Spain can’t call themselves a “Hispano/a” bc they’re not from South America. Spanish people are simply Spanish or “española” LOL I’m done; not gonna comment on this subject further since it’s not this threads purpose.

@jamini @Harvard2020babe You are wrong. On the Common App and the College Board website, Hispanic has a parenthetical statement saying (including Spain), thus I am Hispanic through and through. I was born from Spanish immigrants in America, so I may even be considered Latino, but I am a little hairy on this as well.

You do not come off as rude; many people are confused about what Hispanic and Latino means. However, I wish people could inform themselves about this before making an ignorant retort about something very personal to me. Tell me, why is a someone born in Columbia from parents with Spanish descent Hispanic and someone whose parents are directly Spanish born in America is not? I was born in America like many who consider themselves Hispanic.

But this is not the place for a holy war. I wish good luck to all on this day of reckoning.

@premstudent you do count as Hispanic but not Latina the same way Brazilians count as Latino but not Hispanic. I’m personally from Argentina and my relatives come from Spain.

I am sooo rejected!
I don’t know why I am still hoping I will get in, because my chances are very slim!

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Please do not feed the troIIs. Just report the post. We all know that decisions will not be released before 5.

@jamini You are wrong. You self-identify as Hispanic. For the purposes of college admissions, it includes anyone of Latin or Central American descent or Spanish descent. Someone from Spain can identify as Hispanic. That is made very clear. There is no category for “European”. Also, for college purposes, Hispanic is considered an ethnicity and not a race. Hence you can be “black Hispanic” or “white Hispanic”.

It really is unfair to make categorical students like you have, and to accuse someone of “falsely” identifying themselves, when there is no basis for that statement. All self identification categories are optional in any case.

@MITer2020 sameee!!! It’s actually bad because I am getting excited to know the decision when I obviously know it’s a rejection. Did you put any artistic supplements through slide room ?

I really hope a school like Harvard look at the individuality of a student rather than where the student falls in relation to others.

At least you get to see decisions today; we in Europe have to wait till tomorrow… :((

@goldenmaster : Use VPN or stay up late at night :stuck_out_tongue:

@goldenmaster I’m staying up haha. I could hardly fall asleep last night so I know I have no chance at falling asleep tonight without knowing my decision :stuck_out_tongue:

Does anybody know whether decisions would be available through portal or via email? Would the FA package be available along with the decision? Also, are we receiving any email about the decision time (like for other universities) or Harvard would just surprise us all of a sudden?

@harvard2020babe actually, hispanic means from a Spanish-speaking country. Latino/a means from South (Latin) America. Spanish means from Spain. So @premstudent is both Spanish and Hispanic.

Hello everyone, does anybody know if Harvard will send a letter in the mail for decisions today (March 31st) for students living in the US or not? Shall I expect a mailed letter or just wait until 5 and check my portal? Thank you and good luck!

When do you think the Crimson article about admission statistics goes out?
Could it be before the results?

current harvard freshmen here, signing in to try to help people with nerves but instead have to respond to comments about the hispanic designation by @premstudent

go to http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/difference-between-hispanic-latino-and-spanish_us_55a7ec20e4b0c5f0322c9e44

a person from spain is clearly hispanic

what a funny thing to question so close to almost being classmates

please be sure of something before you speak, especially on a site that is supposed to be supportive (maybe not)

Lol alright people I concede for now. Let’s all get back to the purpose of this thread.

@marebear16 No, I didn’t send any arts supplements in and that is an extra reason to expect a sweet rejection
Hahaha

6 hours and 3 minutes.

Six more hours!! Good luck everyone!
