Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

@Soheils Not sure if this applies to everyone, but in our school’s debate team picks a country and debates on current political topics.

@Barcelona17 thank you! What part of India are you from?

North India,.Saji, I have sent you a message. Please reply. Thanks

@Barcelona17 yep, saw it :slight_smile:

@Sajidur4 I don’t think that is what US teams do, I think it is a tournament kind of thing.

@Soheils yeah, ours is more of a local club, not at all national

Does anyone know if Johns Hopkins has a good Econ program? (I’m expecting deferral from Harvard)

Once you get to committee are factors like SATs and grades still on the cards or are they purely now looking at your “character” and personality?

@ZAPrez

Based on this, it seems that they are still in consideration, but can be compensated for by character, personality and -most importantly- potential. In other words, grades must be supplemented with the aforementioned virtues.

Thank you so much @Soheils !

@ZAPrez You are welcome.

i’ve always been wondering, let’s say that you have a really exceptional, unique talent (like a hobby) in one area (e.g. you’ve represented your country for it). how are the admissions officers (not just harvard, but any school) supposed to know how much emphasis you put on it?

@Soheils I joined my sophomore year to try something new, but then my junior year when I tried to quit the coach basically manipulated everyone trying to quit back into it “screaming that they can’t quit because they already joined etc” so now I’m sortof trapped. I hate it because the people are so cocky and terrible to eachother. Like literally snobby shitheads that I hope I never meet in real life because they are so rude. In the us there are three different types of debate, I do public forum which is about some topic affecting the us (last month was refugees this month is standardized testing) and make a case and argue against another team. It’s so boring. Because the debates are all hypotheticals and I feel like I’m just wasting my time arguing instead of actually doing something to solve said problem. So yeah. That’s why I hate it.

@leobabytiger I am pretty sure it is up to you two show them your dedication to that particular activity.
@tuty143 That coach really knows how to manipulate people, which I think is kinda his job! What about the participants is so off-putting? What do you mean by meeting them in real life? Aren’t debates face to face? Do you dislike the concept or the execution? BTW, the main concept of public forum actually sounds nice to me. (I love arguing for its own sake).
Also, can’t you just quit whenever you want? Being trapped in a group with people you hate sounds terrible.
@cristina1225 It seems that you are not particularly fond of debating either. :slight_smile:
@GrapePocky According to gibby, the committee, being mainly composed of professors, can only meet after the classes end, which I think means this week. About personal qualities, I think that is why they interview people.

Do you think they’ve made the decisions???

lol, in retrospect I realize my app spoke nothing about my personal qualities :stuck_out_tongue:

4 Days and 8 Hours!!!

I noticed a lot of people here have stellar gpas but aren’t that confident in their test scores. I’m really worried because my gpa is really average (great test scores though). Do you think the gpa will be an automatic rejection? and do you think Harvard truly does not care about class rank?

@james1998iq
According to their CDS, they don’t care about class rank.
I think that the only automatic rejection Harvard does is for people that are clearly not ready to handle the workload. I don’t think having a 3.7 GPA implies lack of readiness.

@Soheils Even though you’re just some random dude off the internet, you just relieved so much stress I’ve been carrying for the last month ahaha thanks. Objectively, what do you think your chances are of getting in?
