Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

@QueenN22 I am not joking when I say that I have been dreaming of going to Harvard since I was six years old. I’m considering other schools for practicality sake, but I don’t think I would ever be fully satisfied or happy with attending them. I would be honored and humbled, but I’d still have that small part of me that always wanted to belong at Harvard.

@collapp77 ugh when you guys say things like that, it makes me feel like I don’t deserve my spot. You guys are so dedicated and lobe Harvard so much. I mean I love Harvard too but it’s never been a childhood dream

@QueenN22 I’m sure you deserve it. I’m just not able to get over this. Seriously, if I told you what I went through over these past four years, you’d immediately understand my disappointment. Not to say there aren’t other qualified applicants out there…that’s why I think living in a rural area can be both a blessing and a curse. Look where I ended up! Deferred and dejected. Guess I’ll just be in touch with people for the next few months and will keep my mouth shut until March. I know I can’t keep living life in this stupid sadness, so I’m determined to cheer myself up and give everything another go. :_)

@collapp77 This was weird. I completely took myself out of this thread because I was kind of sad after deferral (stupid I know) but it was nice to be brought back. All I have to say is definitely. I, personally, don’t think monetary donations should be accounted for during admissions, because they miss out on applicants that would mesh better with the community, but universities are businesses so I can’t blame them. On another note, you do have a very good chance. Being from a rural area with few applicants gives you a better chance at having you app thoughtfully looked at. Regional admissions officers will remember your application when they see it again because of how small your town is, and really take another look at it. I wouldn’t give up, at least I’m not trying to. But if it doesn’t work out, it was because of circumstances outside of your hands.

@tuty143 I finally watched the finale of Scream Queens!

@QueenN22 also I never extended my congratulations. Congrats! You will fill your spot well (of course if you choose to attend)! Still sad I got deferred but happy to know that more people like you will be attending such a prestigious school

@QueenN22 Same! was it just me or was it a little meh.

@tuty143 Thank you! You were one of those who when I saw got deferred, my heart broke a little. I really wanted us to meet in real life (there still is a chance though). Anyway, I know that you are a bright and kind soul and you will succeed anywhere you go. I really wish we can get a group chat outside of CC going
I was expecting more from the finale. They picked the most predictable character as the red devil but I guess her background story especially with the heels was interesting. Do you know if the 2nd season a continuation or something completely different

@QueenN22 aww thank you  and also I’m pretty sure it is supposed to be a completely new story every season.

Yes, I am still doing the group chat. Please PM me your phone numbers if you’re interest

@QueenN22 Yes, congratulations, of course! You deserve it, and don’t feel as if any of us deserve it more than you do. @tuty143, I also wish you the best of luck getting in. Harvard would be blind to reject quality applicants like the ones I’ve seen on this thread. Hopefully we do make it, and hopefully we get to study there in the fall of next year. Guys, I’m really hoping the best for you all.

@schroscat Are you still doing the 2020 deferred thread?

And a friend of mine was deferred from Yale and then was accepted in the RD round. He didn’t have any interview though.

So guys, don’t give up! There is still hope!

@goldenmaster Literally all I have right now is hope!

@pioneer16 That makes sense. It seems like the overwhelming majority of people did write one, especially those who were accepted. I have one written, but the only reason I wasn’t sure was that my college counselor told me that my file should basically be as thin as possible while still meeting all requirements. And I already have an essay in my “additional info” section about a gap in my education.

I’ll make the deferred thread now

Also, to go along with a point made earlier: Although I understand giving an advantage to legacies in the Early Round, it also, in a way, rejects students that have great potential.

I’ll use myself as an example. Neither of my parents went to college, so I do not have a legacy status anywhere. So, if every Ivy university regards legacy as a factor, I will have a slim chance of being accepted into them. And, for the sake of the argument, say I’m not accepted into any of them. The Ivys will, in turn, be missing out on many EXTREMELY qualified applicants just because their parents were unable to make a donation/have a legacy. I’m going to be successful regardless of which college I attend; if it’s not Harvard, it’s not Harvard. But for them to consider such a factor closes the doors on many, many applicants due to something they have NO control over. These kids will go to other (still amazing) schools and carry that school’s name instead of Harvard’s. It’s a shame for Harvard that they will lose the opportunity to have a great group of students because they think of money first.

Hey, if we want to send in extra grades/notifications to Harvard, we can do that after the break, right? Like, they’re not going to decide my fate before next year and I’ll miss the chance to update them on my life?

@collapp77 Based on my admittedly incomplete understanding, They do give a boon to donors. However, Harvard has enough donors to not care about losing one if they don’t want the student. This doesn’t mean that they didn’t want you, just that in their eyes, you two, while having something they wanted, were almost similar, and they obviously chose the donor. Since you are clearly superior, It maybe that they found something in your application that they did not like. Maybe you did not highlight your accomplishments well enough? See if your GC can call and ask.
It is also possible that her essays were what Harvard looked for, since she could just look at her siblings’ essays for inspiration.
In the end, don’t make a university your dream, and remember that deferral means that there is still hope. And if they lose you, well, it is their loss. One of their peers will see that you are deserving of a spot. As somebody else said, try to become “the one that got away”. In any case, With your killer ECs, you will have a good chance in the RD pool.
BTW, Can you elaborate on what you americans mean by National level leadership? Do you mean National Youth Football team captain or something?
Also, I just need to add this: As a result of being many people’s dream school, Harvard does not really care about your interest in them, or the reasoning behind it. This is clearly stated in the common data set.
@QueenN22 Sometimes I feel that way too! Everybody here has dreamed of Harvard since their childhood. I did not know that Harvard has a college last winter.

Has any of you gotten an email after the “there’s an update on your portal” one?
