Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

LOL @expertiger the Penn kids are freaking out haha

@expertiger haha i love that.

@snackpack02 I freaking love you!!

All Right, future Harvard grads. How was your interview?

@Barcelona17 My interviewer attended Harvard Dentistry School. It was interesting. He wasn’t the most exciting person, but I still really enjoyed the interview. He just went through my resume and asked about it, and it took a while for us to really get into my story and what I feel is most important to me. (Past a Resume). We also sympathized over how different and often closed-minded our culture is in the south – how Harvard is very much the opposite.

@Barcelona17 Oh, god. Here we go:
I was invited over her house right after I sent in my application. Needless to say, I was not expecting for it to come so early, so I was extremely nervous. Our interview started with her thanking me because I was the excuse for her to clean her office. We discussed small talk about my school, and then, we started talking about my family story (i.e., my dad, the aftermath, where we are now) for quite some time. From there, we talked about medicine and she got a list of my classes. She asked which one was my favorite and why, and I kid you not, this was my response:

“I would say biology is my favorite. I think it’s so amazing how our unique conglomeration of 46 chromosomes can be so advanced to create…sewing machines. Like, who would have thought to put some wire through some metal with a pointy tip and make a sewing machine? Cats can’t do that; we’re really the only species that wears clothing, and that’s just so strange. I love learning about those little things that makes us different…”

I could have said ANYTHING. I could have said particle collider, the Higgs Boson, BUT I SAID SEWING MACHINE. On top of that, my brain went into über nerd mode so I started talking REALLY fast and passionately about…the damn sewing machine.

We also got into a really nice conversation about literature…and then it started to gravitate toward the how we can enrich our lives with just finding the right book. She asked what my most recent read is, and I blurted out the Martian. I HAVE READ SO MANY PRETENTIOUS SMART BOOKS AFTER THE MARTIAN. Somehow, we started talking about the blood moon and how my mom gave up on me once I was outside for an hour and a half taking pictures.

We were talking about my volunteer experience, and THAT went to my family in Turkey. I slipped that everyone in my town in related to each other. I also mentioned how I wanted to learn how to speak Laz because it’s so pretty. Useless, but pretty.

It was just…a lot of me saying the most random things and correlating it to a bigger meaning.

My interview went really well! He had actually emailed my dad beforehand since he’s an alum as well asking him to do interviews and then realized that he was the one interviewing me (so my dad can’t do anyone else’s interviews obviously). The guy is a doctor who went to Harvard undergrad (I also found out later that his son knows my sister) and he was so nice. It felt less like an interview and more like a “Harvard is awesome and here’s why” sort of thing. We bonded over knee issues and talked about how he was taught a lecture by Watson (the Watson from Watson and Crick!) and how he was a horrible teacher haha. I felt so relieved after, I thought it would be super intense but it was really relaxed!

Are you all Americans btw?

@Barcelona17
Civis iranorum sum!!

What is that language? I am not Spanish btw (if that is Spanish). I know nothing apart from ‘Hola’ and ‘Gracias’ and ‘Forca Barca’.

@Barcelona17
Latin. It means : I am an Iranian.

my first post ever, ya’ll! Been lurking on this site for quite some time. Everyone sounds so darn impressive, it makes me doubt myself tremendously.

Has Harvard asked for anyone’s first quarter grades?

@yuyumagic welcome to the low-self esteem club. It includes me…and now you…lol

I’m currently at a Lyndon Johnson panel…

@tuty143 thanks for the welcome! Maybe I can be treasurer and Vice-President of our club and put it on my college applications for my safety schools, where I’m sure to end up!

@gearsstudio I haven’t, but some people here have. What did your counselor say about it and what were your grades like last year?

@yuyumagic I’d probably make you president because my self confidence is so bad I couldn’t even see myself being fit as president of my own club (haha jk im not this negative all the time)

@tuty143 @yuyumagic It’ll be the shortest presidential term: 7 days, 5 hours, and 4 minutes.

@schroscat wow just a week away! just for the record I will most likely not be coming back to the thread after I get the decision, because I’ll be really sad lol.
