Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

@xWadee Sat 2 are not required but they could supplement to the app. Like for me, I got an A-/A+ for AP Biology (split into 2 semesters) but got a 3 on the AP test. This could raise some eyebrows that there was some grade inflation but on the Bio Subject test I got a 720, which would be like a 4 maybe 5 if I were to convert it’. It sort of helps even out inconsistencies or boost you in a certain area. Like a 5 on the test, an A in the class and 780-800 looks really good and shows that you know your stuff

@schroscat Thanks, that’s actually reassuring to hear because I decided not to take any SAT II’s and was scared that I was risking automatic deferral as a result

@Pernix @xWadee Plus, there’s no real way of finding out whether we made committees. We just have to wait; so instead of stressing ourselves out, let’s just enjoy this little moment of ignorance. Most of our decisions have probably already been made, so it’s better to just stay calm.

@xWadee We are all strong applicants here. I cannot stress how every single one of us would do amazingly at Harvard. If admissions decides to reject us based on one score, shame on them. WE ARE SO MUCH MORE THAN A DAMN TEST.

At the end of this year, all I want is just not to regret any decision I made concerning my college application process

@QueenN22 I hope we all understand that we are more than qualified for this school. We are great students and people and Harvard would be lucky to have us all in one place. You should NEVER regret anything, because if all else goes wrong, then it’s a sign that it just wasn’t supposed to happen.

@schroscat I have to go now, but thank you for the chat because I needed the boost of reassurance since lately I’ve been feeling extremely unqualified haha. But definitely, I’m sure we’ll all get into at least one amazing school! Talk to you later, best of luck come Thursday!!

That’s why I don’t like telling people my grade, rank, SAT and etc. As @schroscat says, we are more than numbers. Numbers won’t tell you want you can be the future. How many CEOs of the top 500 companies scored a 2100+ How many doctors, lawyers, scientists…? In all honesty, SAT doesn’t measure intelligence especially with all these books we buy and shortcuts we take. If someone like Einstein took the test, I doubt even he would have gotten a 2400.

@xWadee Best of luck to you!

The SAT only measures someone’s ability on one particular day. What if we were stressed or anxious? The SAT does not care. I think colleges are finally realizing that we should not use such an archaic way of determining a student’s ability; our ability should be measured through our writing, our interview, and our passions. Again, WE ARE SO MUCH MORE THAN A STANDARDIZED TEST AND OUR GPA. SO. MUCH. MORE.

We are ALL brilliant individuals in our own way, and no matter what, we will be successes in this world. Let’s never forget that.

@QueenN22 Einstein was a non-native speaker anyway…

On a side note, when we are all grown up and with kids, what type of parent do you think you will be?

@bearcon haha I meant that Einstein was more of an out of the box thinker. SAT doesn’t really test thinking outside the box

I want to be a rad parent that gives her kids suture sets for their birthday. Gotta start young…

@schroscat Thank you for being so positive  I definitely agree with that. We’ll find success, no matter what our decision may be. But alas, standardized scores are the easiest ways to quantify a student’s academic success. Passion, personality, or even brilliance, are very very subjectively received in the amount of information anyone can possibly get from an application. But I still really hope that strong extracurriculars and strong interests are valued more than a high exact SAT/GPA as long as they fall in the acceptable range.

@Pernix From what I understand, as long as we fit the range, that’s all that matters in terms of the required GPA/SAT. After that, it’s up to who we are as students.

I don’t know what type of parent I want to be. I sort of want a relationship where my child can tell me everything but those are things found in books but at the same time, I don’t want my child to feel as if I’m pressuring them to do something or cutting the off.

personally, i think Einstein would’ve gotten the 2400 haha

I honestly don’t know if I want to be a parent! But if I had kids, I agree, I’d want a relationship where my child would feel comfortable enough telling me anything. I’d want to give my kids the tools to succeed and I’d push them to be the very best they can be, but I wouldn’t ever try to pressure them into something like going to an Ivy League school or getting a 2400 on the SAT or anything like that. Although, I think if/WHEN (gotta stay optimistic! ) I—we!—get into Harvard this week, I’d want my hypothetical kids to go to Harvard as well, although hopefully the legacy status would make it a little easier for them

It’s interesting how Harvard basically equates Heaven on this thread.
