African Americans also report efforts to avoid potential discrimination or to minimize their potential interactions with police. Nearly a third (31%) say they have avoided calling the police, and 22% say they have avoided medical care, even when in need, both for fear of discrimination. Similarly, 27% of Black Americans say they have avoided doing things they might normally, such as using a car or participating in social events, to avoid potentially interacting with police.

The study also found differences in perception between black people in majority-black areas versus those in non-majority-black areas (living in a majority-black area probably correlates to the level of racial segregation in the metro area – note also that the survey found that 40% of those in majority-black areas said that they were in low income areas while only 16% of those in non-majority-black areas said the same).

For example, Table 1 shows that those who live in a predominantly Black neighborhood are
more likely than those in non-majority Black neighborhoods to say that other African Americans often experience discrimination when interacting with police (66% vs. 49%), and when trying to vote or participate in politics (36%vs. 20%).
