I wonder how many spots they actually have left in the class of 2015. Few if any I’d think…

actually, it wasnt good news. im no legacy and have no connections to harvard so it wasnt a courtesy waitlist. i guess they didnt have a “summer melt” as described by fauve. in years for class of 2012 and class of 2013, some 240/150 people were taken from off the waitlist. given this uncertainty i think the use of the waitlist wasnt as stable as it is these later years, which could be the reason why they had more rounds of waitlisting.

Of course no university will ever admit that there are students on the waitlist who really have zero chance of ever making it off. The theory of the “courtesy waitlist” developed from counselors and parents who have seen, over many years, the tendency of some underqualified legacies to sit on the list until the very last cut. The Ivies love their alumns and will do anything to keep them and their donating ways content.

(Michele Hernandez has other examples in her books on admissions.)

I just got a call from Harvard and they offered me an admission into the class of 2016 (taking a gap year). I didn’t have to think twice, Harvard is my dream! To all of you, best of luck. Remember to always follow your dreams!

Congratulations, DTM123! Have you decided/researched what to do with your gap year?

They called you at 8:00 in the morning? My understanding was they call accepted wait-listers in the afternoon, or at least toward the end of the day. It’s hard to believe they would wait a full night just so they could call you first thing in the morning. They would have called you yesterday.

Congratulations DarkTitan! Hope you have a great gap year!

By all means if they did indeed call you, congratulations! I’m just skeptical by nature, I suppose.

Sorry for the confusion, Retter. Yes, they called last night, I just didn’t have enough time to post on the thread. At approximately 8 pm. Thanks everyone!

8 pm?!?! What time zone are you in? EST?

Yes, EST. I live in New York

Harvard’s admission office closes at 5:00. Sorry, I’m not making the connection.

Retter I got the call almost exactly 2 years ago and my admissions rep called me after 8 p.m. - on their cellphone. They don’t just sit in their office to make the calls. It is not productive to belabor this - if you are still waiting you will know very soon.

Oh I see, thanks for the clarification. If it’s the reps that are calling, that’s a different story. Sorry to give you a hard time, DTM. Congratulations!

A friend of mine who lives in the Boston area was z-listed yesterday. Big connections to the school…

Congrats to you two! What do you mean by big connections?

Well don’t congratulate me haha
My friend’s dad is on the board at one of the grad schools and is a big donor

"A friend of mine who lives in the Boston area was z-listed yesterday. Big connections to the school… "

Does she happen to be a tall dancer? My friend’s daughter’s friend was just z-listed, and both her parents went to Harvard. Does anyone other than someone with “connections” ever get z-listed? All the ones I’ve known or heard about (it’s not that many) have been double legacies.

She does not dance. In fact I don’t think she does anything outside of school. She is a legacy, although I think she’s a single one.

Of course all the waitlist acceptees would be legacies/well-connected. As if Harvard’s endowment weren’t large enough already…
