Harvard - Wanted: 'Adventurous woman' to give birth to Neanderthal man

texaspg, That came from a blog, but there is a lot of information about the complex nature of Neanderthals (beyond the “me big brute” stuff). And just so it’s clear, I am in no way endorsing this reseacher’s idea!

The photo of the Neanderthal in the link had an uncanny resemblance to Mel Brooks, hmmm I always thought his humor was a bit primitive.

Anyway, humans already have up to 4% Neanderthal DNA due to previous interbreeding. Not sure the other 96% is all that different.

One difficulty is that the Neanderthal baby would almost certainly be considered fully human under the law - with full legal and citizenship rights. The same legal rights as any modern test-tube baby. Thus all sorts of subject protection/medical experimentation laws would apply and very likely stop the experiment long before it ever got started.

A modern human looking at a Neanderthal family walking down the street would very likely never consider the possibility that they weren’t fully human - rather ugly and heavily-built (big-boned) humans with huge noses and faces that in profile look quite pulled forward, but human nevertheless.

Conversely, the Neanderthals would view us as rather ugly and frail-looking humans with tiny noses and a pushed-in face that is smashed flat into the same plane as the top of the skull, but human nevertheless.

well they will have the same rights…but treated fairly, I dunno.

Sounds like a headline from The Onion…

Someone did. Three of them. Quite good actually. [The Neanderthal Parallax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](The Neanderthal Parallax - Wikipedia)

Especially when dressed like this.

(The common stereotypes regarding intelligence are not necessarily true in their case either.)

Should not require that much science. Let the OWS morons come back for 10 months and plenty of Neanderthal babies could be collected at the gates.

^ Glad to hear that.

Forget about Neanderthals. I would like to see dodos, passenger pigeons, wooly mammoths…

^ and pterodactyls

“They’re usually thought of as a brutish, primitive species.
So what woman would want to give birth to a Neanderthal baby?”

Kris Jenner is reading this thinking, “Been there, done that.”

CBS news has Prof Church saying this: (love the diversity comment)

When asked whether creating a Neanderthal for the sake of scientific curiosity is ethically problematic, Church defended the research saying that the main goal is to increase diversity.

Church goes on to say that a cloned Neanderthal would probably not exist alone in a laboratory, but that scientist would certainly have to “create a cohort” to give the clone a sense of identity.

^Wait…I swear that’s dialog from [Bride of Frankenstein (4/10) Movie CLIP - Pretorius Has a Plan (1935) HD - YouTube](<a href=“Bride of Frankenstein (4/10) Movie CLIP - Pretorius Has a Plan (1935) HD - YouTube”>Bride of Frankenstein (4/10) Movie CLIP - Pretorius Has a Plan (1935) HD - YouTube)

And a new “hook” is born.

There are also engineered Neanderthals in the “Thursday Next” novels by Jasper Fforde.

You’d need the right lawyer to handle all the legal aspects of this:
