Harvard? Yale? Princeton?

Hi, I’m a sophomore at one of the best high schools in California. I was wondering what I would need to do in order for me to be qualifiable.

Later in future: 4.45/4.0
Class rank: top 10%
New PSAT’s: 2070/2400
SAT2: Korean 800, waiting to take Physics, Math 1c and 2c

EC: (I’m really weak in this category, especially community service)

Helped with the mayor/city councilmen campaign, which they all won.
Leader of a group for this campaign.
Will get a recommendation letter from Harvard Law Graduate
Position at a City Hall

Concert master/ church orchestra
My school orchestra was ranked top 5 in the nation.
Will performe at Carnegie Hall with Julliard students this summer.

Hoping to get into People Ambassdy Program to China(summer)
Studying abroad in Spain (summer)
10 day intensive course at any college in nation/medical (summer)

I was wondering which one I should take?

whichever one you think will be the most fun!
oh and what you have so far is impressive…especially playing at carnegie hall with julliard students!
as for hyp, who knows? as of now your psat score is low, but that is good for a soph. im sure it will go up, you seem really smart. good luck!

The only problem is…they cost a bundle

good stats! eek! juliard! carnegie hall! even I know what all of that is! Apply for scholarships if it’s expensive I say! darn… good stats, good stats.

Thanks, but I feel embarrassed compared to other amazing stats posted here.

you have very good stats. Will you be a recruit for track? consider the record you broke.
How good at you in violin? are you in anything outside of school?
If you are VERY (I mean superior in violin and/or sports) and raise your SAT score up 100 pts or so, you have a very good shot at all the schools.
good luck!

Thanks. I hope I qualify for National Merit next year.

don’t feel embarrassed about your stats. performing music at carnegie hall is amazing. plus, you still have time to roudn out your activities if you feel like you need to.

HYP, huh? Do you by any chance KNOW anything about these schools or do you want to go for the name? Do you want to find a school you actually think is good for you?

Your PSAT score is okay for a sophomore but if you want to go to any of these schools, I suggest you raise it on those SATs.

As a person, with your activities and whatnot, you sound pretty interesting. Overall, your stats rock hard. :D

And as for the program, all take place during the summer. I think the purpose of summer is kinda to have fun, unwind a bit. So I agree with strawberryfields - choose whichever sounds the most fun to you.

Performing at Carnegie Hall alone should get you into some good colleges. You’re definitely on the right track.

Is it rare for these schools to recruit athletes?

i don’t think so. probably not as much as some others, but they do keep an eye out for athletes. maybe get in touch w. a track coach.

The first time I heard if a child performing at Carnegie Hall (she was in 4th grade) I was bowled over. Since that time I have come to understand that this is quite common, especially among Asian kids whose piano teachers set up these events. Do not count on it being a hook. The children I know, who are those of Asian clients, are all highly accomplished academically, go to top schools, have been to summer programs all over the world (not to mention math olympiad!) etc. Do something to truly differentiate yourself or you will just be one of a huge number applying to these schools that all sound the same!

do schools get a lot of stereotypical asians? i.e. strong in math/science/music and pre-med?

Just about every asian that i’ve seen on this board has very strong academics plus music, as well as a whole bunch of debate club type EC’s. So yeah, HYPSM probably see a lot of resumes that look pretty much the same…

ugh.

i wrote my essay based on music, and i thought i was being pretty original. guess a lot of asian applicants may have done the same.

but i wrote about listening to the radio, which is a little different from them.

i’m a visual artist, with humanities leanings. who knows. maybe this will add diverstiy or something.

out of curiousity, who was the authority that “ranked” your school orchestra fifth in the nation…

makes music sound like a sport…and while i may be musically inclined (and asian), i’m definitely not atheletic…

It was one of my favorite clients, Asian, who introduced me to college admissions today and to College Confidential. He “introduced” me to the high achieving Asain applicant who applies to big name schools (everyone in his company wants me, a Harvard alum, to write their child a letter as if that would matter!), plays the piano, violin or one of a few other instruments, has close to 800 on the math SAT and an 800 on theSATII in their native language, went to MIT summer school, and on and on. His joke is that he won’t let his kids play anything but a sport, they must score higher on verbal even if it meaning throwing the math section and they can not join an Asian club or take an SATII in their language, do any math ECs or talk about medicine or engineering in their futures.

I don’t know who ranked it, but we got a grammy for being top 5 in the nation.

what school in California do you go to?
