Harvard, you have been served

mavant Per Periwinkle that’s not evidence of a quota. The fact that year after year the same percentage of Asians are accepted compared to a ever growing Asian applicant pool is not evidence. The fact that Asian score the highest in GPA and SAT is not evidence. Nope as long as according to Pizzagirl there are more Asians enrolled than the general population of Asians in the U.S., it’s all good, no discrimination.

Poetgrl, thanks.

I had a post written that 10 percent is a low number. I had to trash that post. :)

Things are changing. That’s good. :)

Look guys, Xiggi nailed it. URMs do not have a culture of using education as a springboard while ORMs and others do. That leads to a situation where you must use quotas. You may hope that an URM gets educated and realizes the benefits of education and goes and changes his birth community. Instead typically what happens is that the educated URM gets assimilated in the other group that always valued education and no real change happens for the URM community at large. I do believe that this group of assimilated URMs are not as deserving of AA, that just doesn’t seem fair to me. YMMV. But let’s not pretend that there are benefits from diversity solely from race when SES is the same. That’s just logical thinking.

Yeah, I thought I should check. It’d been a while.

It occurs to NOBODY that the list that was posted in 479 has a definite correlation to the distribution of Asians in this country?

I mean, good god, Hillel publishes the schools with the largest Jewish populations (both public and private) and it’s no surprise that it’s dominated by schools in the Northeast and some in Florida. Well, duh, that’s where they tend to live.

User: “URMs do not have a culture of using education as a springboard”

Wow–I can’t believe you just said that.

Are you saying that you think Obama being President hasn’t been good for the URM community at large? I think we should do a poll.

Do you believe Sotomeyer isn’t good for the URM community at large?

Do you believe the fact that my neighbors who live down the street might be of different races isn’t good for both my white children, their children, me, them, and the entire country at large, which includes the URM community?

I strongly disagree.

Why is UPenn 17 pct while Penn State is 5 pct? Lol

To follow dstark’s line of thinking…if you believe that the lack diversity could harm Harvard, consider the lack of diversity within the Asian cohort. Admissions is probably a difficult hill to climb for SriLankan, Mongolian, Nepalese, Thai, etc. when they are competing with the Chinese, Korean, Japanese for those few Asian spots.

bogibogi I think its the other way around.

Zeke thanks for the data. It looks like having a lot of Asians is a key ingredient to being a great school.

That list is quite out of date. Asian enrollment at Emory is now at 31%.

<a href=“Facts and Stats | Emory University | Atlanta GA”>http://apply.emory.edu/discover/fastfacts.php</a></p>

Of course it’s only #21 on USNWR, not even in the top 20, so this means absolutely nothing to anyone.

Poetgrl, I am not going argue with you what’s good and what’s bad as that’s a fool’s errand. I just want to point out that if a developer wants to sell a gated community that he or she developed In a way that achieves diversity, and in the process only allow 2 pct Jews and 5 pct Asians, there would be a big freaking lawsuit.

You do what you want in your personal life mate and let the laws prevail in public matters. You know Harvard can just stop taking Federal funds and all this will go away? (I hope they don’t as my wife is faculty and highly dependent on NIH grants lol)

User51969, your wife works at Harvard?

DStark yes she does.

If Emory went up in Asian enrollment then it must be a better school. Does anyone know Emory’s ranking before and after the increase in Asian enrollment?

You could just script this.

Well Emory used to be in the top 20, it dropped.

So true @poetgrl‌ …I knew where this was going from page 1.

:).

My dad was born and raised in Shanghai. Are you Asian?

I doubt Harvard is going to stop taking federal money.

I guess because your wife works at Harvard, I can’t get an answer to how good the computer science department is at Harvard. :)

I was reading the press release about Harvard’s incoming class last year and the class makeup looks quite a but different than it was several years ago. More economic diversity.

Surely it’s the Asian factor.
