Harvey Mudd or Stevens Institute of Tech

Which College ( Harvey Mudd or Stevens Institute of Tech.) would be better for someone who has a composite ACT score of 31 and wants to study Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering (double majors)? If neither College offers this double major opportunity, then the preferred course of study would be Electrical Engineering.
Admission is for Fall 2018

Apply to both, see where you get in, see what is affordable and then decide.

I agree, no need to decide now. Both are fine schools. What do you like better, the east or west coast?

Co-Workers grandson is going to Stevens - He got a great offer but housing is very steep.
I’d say if female, then Harvey Mudd as they have really made a push to bring women into the sciences - just my opinion

Harvey Mudd, afaik, only has a single “Engineering” degree. Their CS program would almost certainly cover substantial elements of computer engineering. If he goes to Mudd, the choice between an engineering and CS major is irrelevant when it comes to employability. It would come down to which course of study he liked more.

That said, a 31 ACT is on the low end for admissions to Mudd unless the student has an exceptional portfolio of tech related ECs and high school coursework.

Stevens. Your ACT is low for Harvey Mudd.

Both admission selectivity and financial aid policies differ at these schools, so it is not necessarily true that these two schools will give you two affordable admission offers.

Harvey Mudd sells itself as an LAC, not just an engineering school. It’s also part of a five college consortium, which means they can offer more than just what is in their own catalog. However I suggest you look at their catalog here and compare courses. https://www.hmc.edu/registrar/academic-catalogue/

My son got into Harvard and CS at Carnegie Mellon, but was waitlisted at HM - and that was quite a while ago. He had the equivalent of a 35 ACT, three 800 subject tests and was in the top 1% of his class. I believe HM would be a pretty serious reach for you. I believe at the time Steven would have been a safety school for him.

I think you should try for Mudd. Stevens is more known for their Mechanical Engineering school. @ Otterma is correct about the ACT score that it is low. Check out the schools data set to see who got accepted to both schools and the scores that were also accepted.

Look at other top schools in CS engineering as well. It is not the same as computer science. Also consider that a student will refine their choice of majors while in college. Look for schools with strength (and affordability) in other STEM fields as well. At this time several schools should be considered and applied to. Next spring one can make the final choice if accepted.

Stevens. No chance at HarveyMudd.

@Otterma CS is a separate degree from engineering, both at Harvey Mudd and elsewhere. There is actually no CE component at all at Mudd.

As others have said, apply and go from there. Likely there really won’t be a choice to worry about here.
