His “apology” was so offensive in so many ways- I’m sorry about what happened, oh hey, how about that NRA -
but perhaps the most offensive part was the claim that people who came of age in the 60s and 70s would be fine, then or now, with sexual harassment. I came of age in the 70s, as did many of you. His loathesome behavior wasn’t OK with women then, and it isn’t OK now.
If your daughter has Secret Service protection, you may have less to worry about while she interns with Weinstein.
Everyone in the film business knew about Harvey for years. It wasn’t a secret at all. I knew both Weinstein and Cosby in my work. They were very different. Cosby was a better kept secret.
I can believe that many in the film business knew of Weinstein’s disgusting behavior, but that doesn’t mean people outside the film business would know.
While daughters of Presidents have Secret Service protection, that doesn’t mean their parents want them to work for sexual perverts who prey on young women. I wouldn’t want my child to work for a sexual predator, even if my child had Secret Service protection. Would you?
This is a surprise? Men (and women) become more attractive with every million dollars they have. The more power you have the better your secrets are kept.
Who is claiming that Weinstein is remotely attractive? The accusation is that he harassed women, not that he seduced them. He had power and could threaten his victims; he didn’t have sex appeal.
His mother (and father)adored him. Remember MiraMax? I bet that he was told every day how perfect he was.
“If your daughter has Secret Service protection, you may have less to worry about while she interns with Weinstein.”
It’s not that your child would even be working with Weinstein, it is the atmosphere of the office, being around others who spend time covering up for him, the jokes. the tension. If the boss is acting like a jerk, so are some of the other people.
They might be well known in some social circles, but unknown outside of them.
An analogous example from other discussions on these forums is that, at colleges, upperclasswomen may be passing word-of-mouth to each other that a certain fraternity house is “rapey”, but new freshwomen may not hear about it until after they have been on campus for a while (perhaps going to parties at that fraternity house before hearing about it).
I don’t understand this comment. I don’t understand what I’m supposed to remember about MiraMax, but whatever it is, I doubt I ever knew it. What is MiraMax? What does it have to do with Harvey Weinstein?
Miramax was co-founded with his brother and was named after their parents Miriam and Max Weinstein. He produced and distributed his first films and TV shows through this company. Think it was later sold to Disney or some other major production company.
Not sure what the significance of this is except to illustrate the close relationship between the brothers and their parents.
If in a loving family with close relationship, you would think he is fulfilled and don’t get naked or masterbate in front of unwilling women. The surprise to me in this case is its rawness. Grow up in a loving family and he does that?
Every family has secrets.^
Secrets like someone in the family molested him while growing up?
This behavior is more generational than political persuasion.
When I started working in 1980 it surprised me how the generation of men 5 to 10 years older than me behaved.
^^ Men of all ages are guilty of this type of behavior. Weinstein is 65 so in 1980, he was 28. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he also acted in this way back then.
Basic human decency is not “generational.”
Unfortunately, I don’t think it is unusual for very wealthy, very successful people to believe that rules, both legal and in terms of basic decency, don’t apply to them. I’ve seen many examples of such that feel so entitled to whatever they want regardless of its impact on others.

The hypocrisy in Hollywood. They claim to be pro-women but within their own industry they cover up abusers.
My father, who would be 90 if still alive, asked my reaction to the Anita Hill hearings in 1991, because he was unaware of the types of behaviors being described in the news in any workplace within his experience. I think that was probably because no one would have behaved like that around him. My answer was that I absolutely believed her because I had had similar experiences., and that was one reason I’d left a particular job, although main reason was I was told flat-out there was no opportunity for women to advance in the organization.
I think it is really good women are speaking up these days about rape and harassment. It lets the good men know what is happening and that has to be helpful. It becomes increasingly clear to me on this board that some very decent men may really have no idea what women experience and it’s not their fault if we don’t tell them. How else can they know?
