Has anyone been able to negotiate upwards UMASS Amherst merit offer? And honors college?

Has anyone been able to negotiate upwards to the max OOS merit (from the next tier down)? Or negotiate honors college, when it wasn’t offered?

I’ve heard (grapevine only) that a more generous merit offer from a U they consider a peer or better will at least get them to consider. So URI no (U Mass believes themselves to be a tier above) but BU could get their attention.

Are you instate?

We did this previously at Pitt and the approach we took was to look at the president/chancellors report to find what they considered peer schools. We used only the ones on that list.

So schools like these ?

Do they look at merit as a $ or actual cost - so some may offer less merit but may also cost less to begin with …

I know that I always talked bottom line costs when I discussed their request for increased aid. I imagine most schools do … if the other school costs more, the aid that school offers will be viewed in that context.

Were guy at a public ? Did you have the ability to adjust or the ability to create a business case for someone to approve an adjustment ?

I was free to negotiate when I was at a private. When I worked at a public, we had a scholarship manager who worked with admissions. They were not able to negotiate aid, but this was a while back. It’s possible that they are able to negotiate now, but if they do, I know that they would have to build a business case & present it to a committee for review.

I’ve not heard about negotiating either. I do know there are opportunities to enter the Honors College after one or two semesters.
