I’m wondering if there are any reputable sites for background check information (arrest records, etc). There appear to be numerous complaints about all of them, and most of my searches turn out to be ads. Has anyone had any experience in this area?

Maybe someone knows otherwise, but I thought this information was only available through the FBI. I know my kids have had to get their fingerprints taken (3x for one job), but the employer sent them out. Not sure where he sent it out, but I thought it went to the FBI.

Any employers out there who can clarify?

There is something called Integrascan, from which I received a report on someone and then I ran a report on myself just for laughs. It’s about $30 but contains convictions from all 50 states, plus for a bit more you can get arrest records etc too (less comprehensive)

After further investigation, I see that in my county, a regular citizen can go to our courthouse and access information on criminal cases, by name, on computers located there. Of course, that’s pretty limited. It looks like FBI information is only available to other law enforcement agencies. CAorBust, did they try to hook you into a monthly fee? Some of these sites are really shifty.

If you’re still interested in obtaining this information, go to this FBI site. They are probably the only place to go for this information. Everything else is probably a scam.
I doubt this information is “only available to other law enforcement agencies”. You’ll need to get a set of fingerprints, obtained from your local police dept, fill in the application, send the $18 fee, and voila! Obviously, you can’t get these reports about someone without their permission &/or knowledge.

I don’t suggest you use integrascan (as suggested by CAorBust), since apparently they’ll say you aren’t in their district and send you a bogus report.

Thanks, limabeans.
