Has anyone turned down a higher ranked university for UT?

I’m (possibly) going to turn down Notre Dame for UT, and I was wondering if anyone is in/has been in the same position? What university did you turn down and for what reason? Mine is mainly based on cost-UT is about 1/3 the cost of Notre Dame.

Hey! I did. I turned down Duke for UT Plan II/BHP. It was NOT a money issue, just what I felt was right at the time. While UT has been great and a fun experience, I do regret (or whatever is a good synonym that is not as strong) not going to Duke. I think I missed out on a lot of the intangibles of college, and it sucks. It really does. So I’m starting my transfer apps right now, which just adds to the workload.

However, in your case, while Norte Dame is good, it doesn’t have the overall name value of a top 10 school and unless you have a specific program at ND that beats UT out of the water, I personally do not believe it is worth it to go there in your financial case. Really, looking at it, it’s crazy how some students get into so much debt for so little pay off. Think about it.

So where do you plan to transfer? I’ve also been accepted at ND which is rated #1 in Accounting and Business School is rated #1. Not defending either school, but also waiting to hear from Duke and trying to decide. Money IS an issue.

Isn’t UT #1 in accounting? [Undergraduate business specialties: Accounting - Best Colleges - Education - US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/spec-accounting)

Turned down Cornell and Columbia for UT. You just have to go where you’ll be happy. Rank isn’t everything.

While Notre Dame may have fared better than UT on one scale (I assume you are referring to Bloomberg), soadquake’s right, UT has held the #1 spot for accounting for the past 5 years in the US News surveys! In fact, McCombs is ranked 7th overall, and 10 of 12 of its business programs rank in the Top 10 (no other school has more specialty biz programs in the Top 10 except U of Penn).

So, really, this isn’t a question of settling for a lesser school. You can find a ranking system to say what you want it to say. But in the final analysis, no one’s going to dispute the fact that McCombs is a great school. It is highly regarded not just in Texas but on the national scene and will make anybody’s Top 10 list.

It is a savvy personal finance move to evaluate the relative cost of undergraduate schools, especially if you think grad school is likely. Where are you more likely to have internship and work opportunities during undergraduate school? If you’re from Texas, then UT because of networking. Where do you see yourself living and working after school? If Texas, then it’s to your advantage to go to school here.

Congrats on your acceptances, and good luck to all making these tough decisions!

My son turned down Amherst, Washington University in St. Louis, Emory, and Rhodes (among others). He really liked the energy in Austin, plus the warm weather!

I agree with TXArtemis - I would save money on undergrad, and then try to get into a prestigious grad school.

I don’t know of any people who have done this, but I can see a few reasons why. Obviously money is a huge issue, but location and basically the whole college feel is probably the number one priority for a lot of people. Personally I want to go to UT because the city and location just seem like awesome places, and the programs, while not the best possible, are still excellent. I want to go into engineering, and UT has one of the best engineering schools while fitting into the whole social aspect that I am looking for. I think that if I got into Duke I would probably go there, but I wouldnt know until I had been to both places and done a lot of research.

USNews ranks UT #7 and ND #14 for undergrad business schools, so both are considered excellent schools. Since perceptions of schools can change from year to year, the only thing you can really consider is “Am I choosing a school with an ‘excellent’ reputation that will, hopefully, give me an ‘excellent’ education?” If I can get that “excellent” education for $150K less, it makes a lot of sense (accounting is a five-year program, so $30K difference a year matters!) I notice that starting salaries for accounting majors from both (most) schools are about the same. Beyond starting salaries, it’s what you do with what you learned that matters. I’m leaning more to the suggestion of UT for undergrad and “splurging” on another school for the fifth year mainly so that I can get two perspectives on the business world and experience two different learning environments. Now if I can just get in… I have an ACT of 35 and a 4.12 GPA, but not top 8%. Very competitive high school.

I would have had to pay 55k for UChicago. No bueno.

Dear Jesus, my sister went to Notre Dame and failed out of the Mendoza Business School classes… had to switch to Sociology. Just her personal preference, but it was the worst four years of her life. She absolutely hated the weather, food, culture, EVERYTHING and it affected her grades. She wanted to go to UT haha. I think you will be happy with your choice (: Some say UT is overrated, some say not prestigious, but they underestimate how smart McCombs students really are as well as other colleges within UT… are you doing Business?

I’m more than likely going to major in engineering. Business is my second option though.

cliving, my son really likes UT engineering so far. Next week, he’s going to start working in a research lab a couple of afternoons a week.

It cracked me up during his college search last year, hearing all the small LA school speeches about how many incredible opportunities their students would have. I think UT offers more than they ever could.

Well as far as I am concerned, UT Austin has incredible programs in both engineering and business. Personally, I want to go to McCombs, and I don’t understand why some people do not consider it as a prestigious school. I made some research and it always appears on the top 10 undergraduate business programs so as ND did. So i think it depends most on what you want for college? i was accepted to Babson College and it is really a great school is also ranked in the top 15 business schools and i heard job opportunities easily came after graduation from there. However, i also applied to mccombs and what would i do i get accepted too? i am from mexico, so i want a place near home. i love parties and huge communities. i wouldn’t support the snow and i really really want to live near mexico after graduation so,why should i go do babson? ut is the perfect fit FOR WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR. i sincerely recommend, ask your self where, what and how you want college life? do some research and good luck with your decision!

Well, I would consider turning down Ivy League schools for UT. If I had to make the decision this very instant, I would choose UT. I’d be premed by the way.

As of now, I would/am considering turning down University of Michigan for UT. (It’s the biggest name that I’ve gotten into so far)
