I entered all the information, but it still isn’t showing up on Craigslist. Is there a delay? Are there any drawbacks to selling on Craigslist?

When you post on Craigslist, they send you a confirmation e-mail that you have to respond to before the listing appears. We sold a car, and it was the smoothest, easiest transaction ever. I couldn’t believe we were even doing it because it seemed so risky, but it worked. We researched and set a fair price, and it sold in less than a day.

I bought a car off Craigslist almost 2 years ago. One of the best purchases I ever made.

Craigslist is great, but beware of the scam buyers who will contact you about your item and claim to need to send you a large check or money order and you are to wire the difference back to them, after taking out a nice “convenience fee”. Don’t do it.

Great experiences selling. Daughter took pics and we put on. Use common sense when people call re it. More than one person home, etc.

I sold a car on craigslist in November, cash buyer, no issues. There is a slight delay until the item is posted. Try doing a search for your title. Just read geezermom’s note, my grandmother’s car also sold within a day.

We’ve used Craigs List twice to sell things (piano, flute). Both times it was very easy to do – even the uploading of photos (which really gets your ad a lot more attention) and it was certainly much cheaper than classified ads in the newspaper! I don’t remember it taking more than just a couple of hours for our items to show up on the website.

We sold an old car to a cash buyer within twenty minutes of posting it. We also sold a old freezer. Be careful of cashier checks as they can be counterfeit. I think cash is the best thing.

I’ve bought and sold concert tickets on Craigslist. Both went extremely well.

I sold several items on craigslist before moving from NJ. It was very useful. A great feature of craigslist is that people contact you via email through craigslist so they dont have your actual email address.

Keep in mind that the person contacting you could be anyone, which includes an honest willing buyer (what you are hoping for) or a serial killer (which you hope to avoid).

Apparently there are people that watch craigslist very very closely. If I price an item too high, I get nothing. If I price a nice item too low I get a dozen emails within an hour! I have to confess there were 2 items that I thoughtlessly priced too low, and after an overwhelming response told the buyers that the items were not available.

Sold a car on Craigslist. It was very easy. I was a little creeped out at first when I started getting emails from people I didn’t know, and I realized I’d have to contact them and tell them where to come see the car. But the second person who saw it bought it, so that was easy. And DH works from home, and I only had people come to see it when we were both home.

I think there might have been a brief delay in posting, but be sure you respond to the email they send you or it doesn’t get posted.

Thanks for your responses. It sounds like I’m a little behind the times. I just couldn’t justify $32 for a 3 day classified ad in my local newspaper.

When we have sold used cars we have always arranged a meeting at the parking lot of the local Sears. That way you don’t have strangers coming to your house. Much safer.

I bought a fifties chair on Ebay. It looked like the brand it was supposed to be but it wasn’t. If I hadn’t had it shipped from Chicago…I would have probably just given it back to the guy.

I found a roommate for my Duke son on Craigslist last year in a major city when he got a job and was unable to field calls ect. Fielded lots of calls from college students in that city dying to unload their summer rental months on someone else…and other calls that were really odd from people offering places already condemned and waiting for a wrecking ball. He ended up living with someone from another culture speaking another language in grad school in another age bracket…but it went fine.

I’ve sold all the furniture from a bedroom, my daughter’s old clothes, an old climbing gym, pictures, mirrors – a number of things I found at yard sales (say, a big framed pic for $10) which my husband has hated & I’ve resold for a bit of a profit.

I make sure I try to meet the people outside my house (like, on my front steps!). I also will respond to a female buyer rather than a male (for safety) and I try to make sure my teen son or husband is home at time of sale.

Then again, now that I’m working full-time, I just end up donating stuff to Good Will. If you have a few minutes though, it can be easy.

Furniture/artwork seems like the easiest to unload.

PS I think that if you have an exchange of a few emails w/a person, your real email address is revealed (anonymous one only works for first few exchanges). But, you can created a new yahoo or gmail address if you want to keep it even more anonymous.

Just to add…I did NOT meet any potential buyers at my home, but instead in the busy parking lot of a strip mall. During the day. And I brought a male friend along who just kept quiet.

And yes, I created a new e-mail address at Yahoo, just for the purpose of this sale.

This fall we sold a ping pong table, a desk and a bookshelf on Craigslist. S had good luck using it to lease an apartment off campus, and also to sublet it when he decided to move out earlier than his rental agreement.

I sold an air hockey table, bought a pool table, bought a car for S1, adopted a cat (he’s the best CL find ever), gave away extra tile and paint, sold extra ski lift tickets, found ski house rentals, bought a wedding dress, and am currently in search of a florist. How do people live without it?

I sold a washer in 12 hours on Craig’s list for my asking price $75. Easiest $75 I ever made.

I have used craigslist to buy and sell furniture and tickets. If you are selling somthing like a sofa or chair, a digital pix is critical. There is some lag time in posting sometimes, but the price is right! I have not had success renting a vacation place - just received lots of obvious bogus offers. This is a potential problem for expensive items as well. But it is a great way to get rid of stuff and pick up some cash. Ebay is more for esoteric (sp) items that can be easily mailed. Try craigslist, then ebay, then try again, then donate it.
