I’m ashamed to say I dont have a dress yet, but I dont. Has anyone used either of the above options?
For what event?
Someone on one of the wedding threads just posted that when her RTR dress arrived it was much too short, and she had to go on an emergency local shopping trip.
Several of the girls in my son’s class used RTR for their prom dresses. Their dresses were gorgeous, but I don’t know about the expense or if they fit right off the bat.
My daughter used RTR and they sent her the wrong dress. The dress they sent still looked good, though, so it worked out fine for her.
My daughter has used RTR many times with fabulous experiences every time. The reviews make it easy to find something for your body type.
She did have to wear a different pair of shoes a couple of times but it worked out fine.
Yes, my daughter has used RTR and was very pleased. We have a brick and mortar store in Chicago. She made an appointment with a stylist and found two dresses for two separate events in one visit. It was painless, and she looked amazing.
@Midwest67 I recently relocated to Chicago, along with a college graduation, which is part of the reason I havent had a chance to look for anything. I will make an appointment and pray they have something that I like and fits well.
Both my D (a college freshman) and I (mom) have used RTR several times and have been very pleased with the selection, service and the dresses themselves.
What is JJ’sHouse?
For those who have use RTR, if you see something now but the event isnt until July, does it cost extra to hold the item since you want to make sure the size is available for event?
A friend of mine ordered formal gowns from JJ’s House for both her daughters’ bat mitzvahs. She was on a tight budget and the price was right but the quality was poor. The dresses were kind of cheap-looking, to tell the truth. It would be better to find a good dress secondhand.
My daughter uses RTR. The company sends two dresses in two different sizes to minimize fit issues. Also helpful: regular women post photos of themselves wearing the piece, so you know how it would look on a “regular” body.
That said, I’m not sure how good a deal RTR is… by the time you’re done with shipping, many of the dresses are in the $100 range (and of course they do have designer pieces in the $125+ range.)
I really think going to a big sale at a well-stocked department store is a better way to go.
Fwiw, I looked at JJs, but ended up getting a custom made dress from Light in the Box. Even lower priced than JJs. It fits perfectly and, imo, the quality was the same or better than the dresses in stores (and I tried on a lot of dresses at all kinds of stores) --at less than half the cost. People warned me not to try this “cheap website,” said the quality would be poor, etc. , but that was not my experience. If you order online, check size charts/measure carefully.
I’ve used Rent the Runway and so far I’ve had great experiences. I have a lot of little black business dresses in my closet and want wanted something more fun for a family wedding. I rented something off the shoulder, in a bright color. I thought it was great to rent because it wasn’t the sort of dress I’d wear more than once. If I bought it, it would be sitting in my closet for two years or so before I had another appropriate occasion. It cost $30 for the rental, and I signed up for an extra package that gave me free shipping and a free dress. I think the add on package was either $9.95 or $19.95. (It will pop up when you do your first rental.) I used my second, “free” dress this weekend. That was also a good rental because it was from an expensive brand that I’ve been interested in online (Draper James) but generally-I don’t splurge on $200 day dresses. It was fun to wear to my daughter’s dance recital, again-not something I need to own. Both of the dresses that I rented were of high quality. I think the prices are reasonable and if you’re worried about fit, you could do the 8 day rental, and if it didn’t fit, RTR seems like they’d move heaven and earth to make you happy-you’d have enough time to get something else delivered. Or-depending on the cost, you could do 4 day rental and try the dress on now, and then rent again for your actual event dates. As I said-they offer deals and discounts. I’m sure you can make it work if you find something you like. And to your question, reserving months in advance is the way to go, as that way your dress is locked down for you date. Good luck!
