I just signed up last night. DZ works downtown and we are going to an event. I told him not to drive all the way home at rush hour and all the way back. I would get an uber driver. Well, it’s starting to creep me out a little thinking about getting in a car alone with some strange man. Taxis are twice as much. I’m considering asking a neighborhood high school kid to take me for $20, but I always hate asking favors. I also read that you can’t actually make a reservation, but just rely on them getting to you when they can.
I have used uber alone when someone with the app got me one. I’ve had as many female as male drivers.
I’m a single woman and I use Uber all the time by myself. I have never had a problem. It is very efficient, at least in my area and the places I’ve traveled to. And, keep in mind there’s a record of who you are getting in the car with, which is not always true with a cab.
If you are price-shopping, make sure to look at the prices at about the time you want to travel; prices do change due to their “surge pricing” model. I’ve never had to wait more than 15 minutes for a car, and it is usually much, much faster than that.
Thanks. When I looked yesterday it said between 14 to 19 dollars. I might see if a high school kid wants to make $20, especially if it’s going to be more than that as it will be rush hour on a Friday.
Uber Black is more expensive, but around here, the cars are almost always professional – a livery service with some down time to fill. It’s usually a black SUV or a Town Car - no different than using a limo service.
Uber can send location and ETA to friends. I have used it myself. The drivers I have had all behaved professionally. I would rather ride with a more experienced uber driver than a high school kid!
So when I input my location it starts timing down. What is that?
^It’s telling you how long it will take the driver to get to you.
I use Uber alone all the time, as have my kids. Remember, when you get into a taxi you’re getting into a car with a stranger as well.
Thanks?
Oop I didn’t mean to put a question mark. Also I didn’t get a first timers promo code either!
Exactly. The man who murdered Hannah Graham drove a Yellow Cab. Authorities also believe he murdered Morgan Harrington, who was last seen alive getting into a cab.
In a weird twist of fate, the son of our neighbor in Maine was killed by a cab driver in a neighborhood very close to my parents in Austin. This was many years ago.
I’ve used Uber alone. The app is very easy to use and I find it much better than cab service where I’ve used it. As others have said, I’d rather be in an Uber than with an inexperienced high school kid driver.
I just have a problem w/ my college-age daughter going in a taxi or Uber ALONE. She has used Uber in the past…it 'makes me feel very uneasy. 'Just me… (Note that I have used Uber.)
We live in a large east coast city and I use Uber and Lyft all of the time. My 16 year old daughter and her friends use it all of the time to get around the city, especially at night when I don’t want her on the bus or subway alone. It sends you a photo of the driver and car/license plate #. I took one to work yesterday. When the car arrived I checked the make/model and photo of the driver. He said, “hello Amom2girls” You can ask him where your destination is to confirm again that he is your correct driver.
Hope this helps. Check and see if that new service that is only female drivers/riders has started in your area. I can’t remember the name, but it is supposed to role out this month.
At the risk of getting pounced by the helicopter parent police, I would suggest you work out a system with your daughters. If they need to use Uber after hours, have them ring you, no matter what time it is. “Hi mom, I know it’s 2am but do you have 20 minutes to chat while I ride home?” Surely it wouldn’t be very often and it’s an excuse to catch up.
When I was a teenager I had a contract with my parents to call for a ride if I had a problem (any problem). Any time, day or night. No questions asked. Is this much different?
@conmama when you use Uber there is an option for the app to email someone, that will tell you when you were picked, route, and your dropoff.
Both my daughter and I use Uber frequently both in our home town and when traveling. Cheaper, cleaner and better service than cabs in my mind. I hate renting a car in a strange city and trying to find my way around…uber is so darn easy…not sure how else I would get around as simply in many cities I have traveled to.
At home I love it at night. I am single and dislike driving at night, finding parking at venues, etc. Uber has been a great solution for me. All the drivers have been friendly, professional and clean (unlike many cab rides recently!)
After your ride you rank the driver (and he or she ranks you!)
Both girls use it and have ridden alone. Between jobs, one drove for them, had good stories, some funny.
Just used it for the first time. Love it! So easy. Felt very comfortable and safe.
