Sweet, conmama. My girl’s first drive was a family of four carrying a complete turkey dinner.
Apologies if this was mentioned and I missed it. There is a new service called Chariot that is Uber-like but only for women drivers and passengers.
I looked that up, PIzzagirl. I think right now these start ups are just in NYC and Boston. Can’t wait until they are nationwide.
I am thinking about doing some driving for Uber.
Um, does the passenger sit in the front or back seat of an Uber?
Back seat just like a taxi.
Does anyone tip an Uber driver? I am so used to tipping NYC cab drivers that it feels wrong to me to not do the same with Uber. D says no one does - is that true?
Not supposed to, aiui, part of the driver rules.
The beauty of Uber is don’t carry money or credit card. Uber charges you directly from credit card or Paypal account.
No, the whole schtick of Uber is that you don’t tip. You just get out of the car and walk away when you reach your destination - no digging for cash or credit card since it’s already on your credit card and they email you a receipt automatically.
My D had an Uber driver show up one morning who offered her a bottle of water and a granola bar “just in case she hadn’t had time for breakfast.” With regards to surge pricing, I know folks who have walked a few block and found the prices have dropped. My son and friends needed a ride home after clubbing one nite and took the T a couple of stops then requested an Uber ride. He said prices were much lower.
I didn’t tip.
No tipping is required, but I’ve done it a few of times when service was exceptional. No one is getting rich from being an Uber driver, plus the cost is often less than a cab would be, so I don’t feel a tip is excessive when the experience calls out for one (such as mamom’s D’s breakfast offer).
I’ve been known to slip a friendly Uber driver some cash. I’ve heard Lyft allows for tipping?
Since I am seriously considering driving for Uber (and/or maybe Lyft) I have researched some of this. Uber drivers make very little. In Charlotte the rider pays .75 per mile and the driver pays Uber a 25% commission. Drivers are very unhappy about the “no tipping” policy and it is starting to change. (From an article: “As part of the settlement with drivers in California and Massachusetts, Uber has agreed to notify customers more clearly that tips are not included in fares and give tacit approval for optional gratuity.”) Lyft lets you add a tip within the app. Uber currently does not, so a rider would have to give the driver a cash tip.
I am thinking about trying Uber. Normally I don’t do any credit card transactions from the smartphone Would I be able to do initial setup from the home computer?
yes, I did it from my iPad. Then they tell you the’ll text a code for you to use on your app. So, I set it up and immediately was texted. I wrote it down. Then I got the uber app. I installed it and I after I signed in, it asked for the code.
If you know someone that uses uber, you can adk for their promo code and you will get $10 off your first ride and they get something also…don’t know what.
Come back with any questions, I did ask my neighbor for help.
